honestly, just leave it out. you wont notice any difference in the soup.

Personally, I don't think one dry bay leaf adds that much flavor. If you left it out completely, it wouldn't be missed.

I personally think thyme goes really well with peas and is also great in soup. So I vote for thyme. Just put whatever amount is appropriate to the flavor.

p.s. I don't think a bay leaf is critical, I've had plenty of pea soup made without it.

Nothing, seriously.

bay leaf is bay leaf, there is no substitute for its flavor.

if you don't have any, then you may substitute any strong herb that you like - for instance thyme, rosemary, oregano are all relatively strong dry herbs - keeping in mind that the original flavor of the recipe is not going to be the same.

both thyme and a dash of oregano (i would go easy on the oregano ) are fine. don't stress out about the bay leaf. I never did understand why ONE bay leaf would even be put into a recipe. I can't say it ever really did much "flavoring".

another bayleaf ?

ive never used bay leaf for vegetables. use thyme.

Honestly, you don't need to add the bay leaf, and certainly not oregano...Many years of making Split Pea Soup....sometimes I add the bay leaf sometimes I didn't no big thing....dont sweat the small stuff....
DO ADD....chopped onions, and cubed carrots, chopped potatoes, salt and pepper. Now for the meat....if you add it....Ham cubes when the peas are cooked and almost soft, or you can start the soup with a ham bone, and remove it just before serving. Many times I cut up smoked sausage in coins or circles, just sliced bite sized..(Hillshire any one of the ones they have works) Sometimes I will add a dash of garlic...but again not critical...and if you get too much...it doesn't taste like split pea soup.....Cook with the lid off...if you need to thicken it up just before you eat...use instant potatoes, my favorite is Potatoe Buds....forget all that blender type thickening up foolishness...unnessary...just use the instant potatoes........I'm known for making delicious Pea Soup, Navy Bean Soups, Chicken Soups....etc...If I don't let family and friends know I am making soups...I get told..about it...later

Substitute mint. Use about half of the amount called for bay leaf.

well,,,, the thyme does sound appropriate to me
or you cd use:
** cumin seeds warmed in a little hot melted butter
or
** allspice
