Can I use vitamin D milk in place of "Half and Half"?!


Question: I want to make a pasta sauce to go with dinner and the recipe calls for 1/2 cup of "half and half" ... well, I don't have any "half and half" and the weather is keeping me going to the store to get some. Can I use the Vitamin D milk I have in place of the "Half and half"?

Yes you can.......it will change the consistency a bit...(thinner)but you can add a little cornstarch to the milk and it wont change at all.

The half-and-half in the recipe is required for the fat content. If you substitute whole milk, you're half way there, but the sauce maybe a little more runny. It should taste the same - just a little less creamy.

Yes. Keep in mind however 1/2 & 1/2 is a blend of cream and milk. Pure milk will not be as rich. Another thickening agent may be needed if the sauce is not thick enough. This is true for a lot recipes. As I do not know exactly what you are making, it is difficult to tell. Don't just add cornstarch. Make a cold water slurry with it first... Use arrowroot instead if you have it.

The milk should be a fine substitute. As mentioned above, you add cornstarch as a thickener by adding it to a small qauntity of cold water, then adding it to the sauce. If you don't have cornstarch, then you can also add a rue to the sauce. Just combine equal qauntities of butter with flour, and cook over medium heat until the paste turns golden brown and include in the sauce.

It will probably work but may be a little thinner. If you have canned condensed milk that is the best option. If you don't have any canned milk be sure to get some next time you go out. It's great in gravies, and mashed potatos as well.

I wouldn't because the milk does not have the heavy cream content of the half and half.
The vitamin D is put in all dairy products but has nothing to do with the texture or richness.
