Why does canned white meat chicken(in water) smell the same as canned tuna(in water)?!

Question: I'm not fond of the smell of tuna...so I tried making tuna helper for my kids with canned chicken instead. Except...it smells almost as bad as tuna! How can fowl smell like fish?

Great question if had a similar experience in culinary school recently. I am not a fan of Bologna and when we studied how to cure meat ( sausage...) they all came out tasting like Bologna. I sat and tried to figure it out and I realized that the taste i was experiencing was not Bologna but the curing mixture this was the only common element that they shared(correction cured products share more in common than just the curing mixture, I say this because some culinarians out there are getting a little up tight with my responces, just trying to help). So my guess is you are tasting the water solution that these two different products share, they apparently are the same or close to the same mixture so do not give up an tuna. Suggestion rinse your canned chicken in lightly warm water to remove as much of the solution as possible be careful not to rinse it to hard or you will turn the chicken into mush!

This sounds like a question for......................

JESSICA SIMPSON! =)

think of the source +ingredients besides the meat + their canning process

It doesn't . Change brands quick

yuck, Ive never noticed that and if I had, I wouldn't be eating it.
Maybe its just the metallic smell you are associating it with

I don't think they smell the same at all.

I know exactly what you mean and that is why I stopped buying it in a can. If you want to make a chicken salad or something like that it's worth the time to bake or even boil it.

No, the smell of it is not nearly as strong as tuna.

Also if you use Albacore tuna it smells much less than the cheaper stuff.

I bought canned chicken just one time.It smelled like tuna too.It tasted terrible.Never bought it again. Now I just take the time to cook chicken for salad and casseroles.

I also thought this same thing. I think Tyson has Chicken in a pouch near the canned stuff - you could try that. I also think they have cubed chicken in the freezer section that is near the chicken nuggets. OR try using the "grilled" chicken strips near the lunch meat - the kind you would throw on a salad or in a wrap. Hope this helps.
