Chuck in a handful of lentils, or just leave it out altogether. Soup's not an exact science!

Split peas or lentils.

Try Orzo, just make sure you don't overcook, because it gets so tender you hardly know it's there.

Rice or small pasta will substitue just fine.

Rice would look similar, if you intend leaving the grains whole.

You could also use lentils, either the red or green (continental).

Most other beans or peas will need pre-soaking before cooking.
