Unique cake decorations?!
something along the lines of this: taking a big oak leaf and pouring chocolate on, letting it harden, peeling the leaf off and using it to top a cake. [i can't use that]
any good suggestions?
Answers: what are some very unique ways to decorate a cake? not just writing something with frosting, but something very unique and creative.

I really like using meringue to decorate with. You can make it up and pipe it out with a pastry bag, then bake it as you would normal meringues - it hardens up nicely and can be used for 3D decorations. I used it this year to write my sons name on his cake, and have his name stand up on the cake.
Think non-traditional, like make it look like an appliance, or a single flower.
For example, you might cover the entire cake (preferably a dome shaped cake) with spiky chrysanthemum petals. Add a few (paper) leave on the edge of the plate (stick 'em out, over the edge). You could bake a domed cake in a stainless mixing bowl, or bake two layers, choose the one with the highest dome, then trim the *other one* flat. Use the flat one on bottom, put the rounded one with the round up.
Or ice the top yellow or pink. Build a collar, with a ruffly top edge, out of fondant, or white choc. Wrap the collar around the entire side of the cake, with the ruffle sticking up. Make 5-7 petals for the same stuff as the ruffle, and stick them under the edge of the cake, again, sticking over the edge of the plate. Voila! A big daffodil.
Or make hundreds of rose petals out of choc, and make the entire thing into a rose.
Basically, think of something the represents the season, or interests of the person it's for, the occasion (like baby shower?) or your interest. Then, think of how to make that thing.
Good luck. These are fun.
i would not use anything but a lemon or orange leaf. hand molded figures are also nice, but they are time consuming. you can use fondant, gumpaste, marzipan. there is also "runout" technique, go to the wilton website. they will have some great ideas.
I know that the traditional putting of real fresh flowers is not thought of except for at bakery's and on wedding cakes. It also works for homemade cakes, too! My sister-in law made a cake w/ flowers (Rose of Sharon, and baby's breath w/ greenery) on it that turned out beautiful and creative! It was awesome!!
