How can I tell if an egg is bad without breaking it?
Most everything has changed in the world of cooking in the past 250 years, but not the method for determining if you've got a bad egg.
There is a small air pocket in the large end of the egg. When the egg is fresh, the pocket is only about 1/8th of an inch deep and as large around as a dime. As the egg ages, however, it loses both moisture and carbon dioxide — shrinking — so that the size of the air space increases. And the size of the air space determines the buoyancy of the egg.
So if you submerge a very fresh egg in water, it will lie on the bottom. An egg that is a week or so old will lie on the bottom but bob slightly. An egg that is three weeks or so old will balance on its small end, with the large end reaching for the sky. And a bad egg will float.
I've heard that that is true as well and it seems to be, but another way of telling is if when you crack it, it spreads out a lot, it is old. If it holds in a small area and sits kind of high, then it is fresh.
Put it in a glass of water. If it floats, it is no good.
Crack them into a bowl. If they smell funny, don't use them.
If they float, they are bad. Bad eggs float because as days go by, gas develops inside the shell.
Floaters are old.>.............................
i don't think that that is true because when you boil eggs they don't float in the pot I think the only way to tell if an egg is rotten is to crack it open and if it smells rotten throw it away.
crack it,and smell
Fill a container with cold water and drop each egg into it. If your egg floats, it is bad, sinkers are good, if they hang in the middle, use them today. As an egg ages, the sack inside of it fills with air which makes it float.
Egg cartons DO have an experation date on the end of the carton.
Old, not necessarily bad eggs, don't float in water.
If you aren't comfortable with it, don't use it.
When in doubt, throw it out!!!
