When people say that food is "rustic", are they saying that it's old fashioned?!

Question: Rustic usually means Rural or Country and also chopped roughly not sliced and diced like some places do also if you do see rustic meals offered you will be full when you come out not looking for the chippy after a meal in a ponssy upper class cafe

Possibly, it also means peasant or traditional.

Kind of. What they may mean is that its been served in that area for hundreds of years.

Some times it means like if you cut something rustically then it is cut into different sizes and aren't all too precise.

It could, but more likely that it is simple, plain, country food.

Rustic usually refers to a 'homemade' feeling. Like bread that is not shaped perfectly, etc. Think of food that you would eat in a hand made log cabin, that is rustic.

Not necessarily.

I think of rustic as simple, country living....like a log cabin.
so rustic food is probably simple, easy to prepare, comfort dishes.

It usually refers to an 'unpolished' finish - something that doesn't look professionally made or has a homemade appearance. so with food, sauces with tomatoes for instance can be chunky. soups can be thick and wholesome as opposed to a consomméor bisque which would have a very 'finished' look to it.

In terms of cooking, It's kinda like the term "Home Cooking" or relating to food cooked in a particular region.

I agree w/ Anna G, great answer!

"Rustic" means 'from the country'!
In other woods, lots of fresh vegetables, usually chunky-cut.
With lots of fresh-cut herbs.

It means a little old fashioned, home style and basic. Rustic dishes are going to be simple and easy.
