Need help making colorful/professional frosting!! (just bought betty crocker 100 piece cake set)?!
Answers: well i bought da betty crocker 100 piece cake set and i want to make a cake but i need frosting. it has 2 recipes (chocolate buttercream & buttercream) but i want to know if it will be like that frosting in the commercial (that is if anyone has seen the commercial) & can i make it colorful by just adding food coloring?
yes you can add food colouring in a bowl use a mixer and add 2 drops at a time till the right color consistence is arrived at...
do butter cream it will be white and you can add colors the chocolate one will be brown and you can't tint it...
In my experience, the home-made icings are much prettier and easier to dye than the store-bought kind. Make a little of the buttercream icing, and test the color with food coloring.
The best food coloring to add to frosting is a paste food coloring. If you use liquid it changes the texture of the frosting by the time you get enough to get really vibrant colors. I use the wilton brand. You can get such vibrant colors with these versus the liquid drops you buy at grocery stores.
the most intense color is gel for frosting. you can get it at walmart in the craft section or at any craft store, it won't water it down and man is it bold if you use alot
INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup butter (no substitutes), softened
1/2 cup shortning
8 cups confectioners' sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 tsp almond extract(I like the flavor of this but it is optional)
1/2 cup milk
DIRECTIONS
In a mixing bowl, cream butter. Beat in sugar and vanilla. Add milk until frosting reaches desired consistency. use beaters or a stand mixer. and really beat for 2-3 minutes it makes it fluffy and easy to pipe. use gel food coloring it doesn't change consistancy of frosting
You can use the food coloring you get in the grocery store if you only want a pale color. If you want medium or dark you need to get gel or paste color. Some craft stores carry these.

I don't know about the frosting but I sure want to buy that cake set. I saw the commercials and it looks like fun! Good luck!
yeah that's how a lot of the professionals do it.
I don't do frosting.... just cake
but IF I need anything it is here

adding the liquid food coloring is going to make your frosting runny, try the paste(they sell it at walmart in the craft section). or try adding more powdered sugar.
1 stick butter (unsalted)
1 stick butter (salted)
1 cup shortening
2lb bag of confectioner's sugar
3 teaspoons clear vanilla extract
5-6 tablespoons of milk (cold)
Cream butter and shortening. Add clear vanilla extract then add confectioner's sugar. Allow confectioner's sugar to blend well then add milk. For thinner consistency, add more than 6 tablespoons of milk.
I am a cake decorator & here's the icing recipe I use:
(Well, actually, I make a triple batch each time, but here it is for a single cake)
1 small can Crisco (I don't skimp on the cheap brands)
1 lb. powdered sugar
1 tsp. clear vanilla flavoring
2 tsp. butter flavoring (try to find one without yellow dye in it)
~ 1 Tbsp. milk (optional)
~ 1/8 tsp. salt
Cream Crisco, flavorings & salt together. Add powdered sugar & add milk if you need it to be softer. If you're trying to make roses, eliminate the milk so the icing will be stiffer.
This is a good recipe & I promise you will get good reviews.
Here are some other essential tips for success:
* Use Duncan Hines cake mixes
* DON'T use butter flavor Crisco, your icing will be yellow
* Go to a cake decroating supply place & get some good colorings. You can order them from Wilton if you don't have any places near you.
* Find a good butter flavor that doesn't turn your icing yellow. This is the key to getting good colors.
* Get a good oven thermometer that you can leave in the oven & go by it instead of what the dial on your oven says.
* Check your cake at least 15 minutes before the box says it should be done...the boxes always tell you too long! Stick a cake tester or toothpick in to check if it's done. The toothpick will come out without batter or gooey dough. When the cake starts pulling away from the sides it's done or close to it.
* Get some disposable bags so you don't have to empty them each time you make a cake. One for each color. Save the bags for the next time, if you make cakes a lot. You can scrape it out & put fresh in if it's been too long, or take the old icing & add it to fresh if it's still good.
Get a Wilton book to learn cake decorating techniques & practice on your friends! C: If you're good, pretty soon they'll be asking how much you'd charge to make one for their next event! I was a stay at home mom when my kids were little because I had a cake business on the side. It's lots of fun...good luck!
