Butter instead of shortening good enough?!


Question: in this recipe is it fine to use butter instead of shortening?

4 cups of powdered sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup shortening (wanna use butter instead)
2 to 3 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract (allergic to any kinds of nuts so i gotta use vanilla extract)

if i want to substitute butter for the shortening would i have to use 1/2 cup of butter for butter and 1/2 cup of butter for the sugar or what? i need help... :]

If this is recipe is for frosting, then no butter is not a good substitute. Remember, shortening is stored on the shelf. It remains solid longer than butter. If you use butter, you will have to keep the frosted treat in the refrigerator.

Also, cut back on the milk. Add it slowly into the mix until you reach the prefer consistency.

If you store the rest of the frosting, you might have to add more milk.

Vanilla is a good substitute.

yep its fine. Butter is actually a form of shortening.

Here is a good rule of thumb. You can use butter as a substitute to shortening if your aren't baking... You need to be careful when baking because butter burns at a much lower temp than shortening... That doesn't mean you can't use butter when baking, you just need to be careful with temperature. otherwise you have overbrowned goods.....

usually you can substitute any fat for another. with no change in amounts.
