Is eating undercooked steak dangerous?!
Answers: My friend made steak and it was obviously undercooked (though it wasn't that purple color at all and it was at least warm all the way through), I mean I like my steak medium/medium rare but this was... not even there I don't think. Probably close though... I figured since it was steak (and I didn't want to hurt her feelings) that it would be fine to eat. I won't get sick, right?
As long as the steak has been handled okay (kept in the fridge, not left out in a warm room) it's fine to eat even if it's almost raw.
Even if it's still bloody in the inside, that's just "rare". I actually personally like it that way, and I've never had any problems with it. It's even an option at restaurants, and that's how I generally order it.
Totally healthy, you'll be fine.
In future though... if you have doubts, it's better to ask and hurt someone's feelings than to risk food poisoning. The main thing to worry about being undercooked is however pork and chicken, neither of which should be eaten if red juices are still coming out.
It's okay as long as it's not too undercooked.
No. The reason is that e.coli, if it's on the steak, is on the OUTSIDE. Same with roasts. Hamburger, on the other hand, has no outside, it's all mixed up. So long as your steak is cooked well on the outside, not a problem. My preference is to grill outside or broil it as that reaches every outside part better than what you can do on top of stove.
I used to love rare steak, but can't chew it as well today, so have to go for medium.
no you should be ok,its not like undercooked chicken. As long as your not pregnant and she handled it ok before cooking - like she didnt leave it sitting in a warm room or anything.
am sure u are used to steak and u can judge it urself ...u know when its well cooked and health to eat as its not healthy to eat it rare and medium rare..and we thank your friend that she cooked for u
Listen, in Italy they eat raw thinly sliced steak, marinaded in lemon juice. It's called carpaccio. And it's delicious.
I have had badly cooked steak and what people normally do is cook it very gently. That's bad. Steak needs to be kicked around and exposed to the highest temperature possible, but only for quite a brief time.
The person who pointed out that e.coli lives on the surface of the meat was dead right. The appropriate temperature for steak - i.e., insanely hot - kills e.coli bacteria. The reason people get e.coli from burgers etc. is that grinding the meat up distributes the surface of the meat around the whole portion of meat, and so anything inside the burger that isn't cooked above a certain temperature can harbour lethal bacteria. Having said that, as a teenager I used to cook myself rare burgers and never had any ill effects. But then I have an iron stomach, and I was probably very lucky.
To me, a perfect steak is charred on the outside, brown just inside, pink about 3/4 of the way in and purple in a very thin strip right in the middle. But that's difficult to achieve.
OK, here is the scoop on beef. Ground beef is dangerous and should be cooked to 155 F. Ground beef is at risk for containing E-coli because they grind up portions of intestines when they make ground beef. Poop and urine are the only places in a cow where this bacteria lives. Intestines contain poop.
Steak, on the other hand, does not come from this part of a cow. It is E-coli free. The health department recommends cooking rare steak to 130 F. This is NOT hot enough to kill E-coli. The health department made this recommendation because they know that steak is safe.
Also, steak tartar is served in some restaurants. This is ground up raw Fillet Mignon. The health department is totally ok with this.
You're gonna be OK and you will not get sick.
Buy a meat thermometer.
I like my steak rare and my mother-in-law and my dad eat theirs "blue rare", where it's just grilled on each side and not neccesrily warmed thru all the way and I have never seen either get sick. As long as it hasn't sat out for extended periods of time it's okay. And actually let it warm to room temp before you cook it. Have you heard of steak tar-tar. It's raw steak, diced tiny and with other stuff added.
okay have you heard of ecoli ? yeah and you can die from it . cook your food regardless.
