What is red ground pepper, or where can I find it?!
Answers: I have a reciepe that calls for 1 tsp Ground Red Pepper and 1/2 tsp of Cayenne Pepper, so these spices are not the same. I could not find anything at the store any suggestions.
for those of you who think ground red pepper comes from a grinder liek the mixed pepper grinders you find, i am disgusted at your knowledge of the subject of foods. I am a culinary graduate and will tell you there are only 3 types of peppercorn berries, green, pink and black, they are all various stages of ripness and roasting achieved during harvesting and processing.
there, with that out of the way and i am sorry for the rant...
they are probably reffering to something simmialr to a red pepper flake that has been ground. something with little capsasion (oil in a pepper that creates the heat or spice) using a basic chili powder for a quick substitution will not alter the recipe that much. or if you can find, and i know you can, just get it, you will find yourself using it in more ways than you think once you try it
It probably calls for a milder chili powder than cayenne. Something labeled simply "chili powder" should work; if you can find it, I recommend ancho chili powder.
Ground red pepper is the spice extracted from a typical red pepper you see in the store. Cayenne pepper is a spice extracted from red chili peppers. They have different levels of heat but if you don't have one you can always use the other.
Also - ground red pepper is a basic spice, I have never had any trouble finding it in the normal grocery store.
Often red peppers are included in the containers of mixed peppercorns.
Red Peppers are milder than Cayenne.
Ask for them, or use white or black peppercorns if you can't get them.
Try an Asian specialty store if your regular market cant help.
