Use 2 sticks of butter, 3-4 cups powdered sugar, and 1 tsp vanilla flavor; if it's too thick, add a tiny, tiny bit of milk; if it's too thin, add more sugar. You can pick up food color paste at wal-mart or any craft store for like $2. Just mix it in the bowl with the frosting, but don't overdo it because the stuff tastes nasty in large quantities. Just a toothpick dipped in it then swirled in the frosting is good enough. Use separate bowls and colors and make a pretty variety of cupcakes. Maybe blues and purples for winter, or red and pink for Valentine's Day? Good luck!

you can use something called shortening
its what bakers use and its really sweet
thats all i know but you can look up stuff on it if you want

You can add food dye to a tube of white vanilla frosting.

powdered sugar, water, and any flavoring and food coloring.

are you talking about frosting or icing? they are completely different!

My Grandmother ALWAYS made the BEST frosting. She never bought it. She used only butter and sugar with some vanilla. And yes just add food coloring and mix it with a hand mixer.

Take half cup butter, 2 cups icing sugar and a little milk. Just beat it all together and add food colouring you like. If you use too much liquid food color just add more sugar.

If you want different colors, put portions of plain icing into separate bowls and THEN add you color.

(This kind of icing doesn't set, it's a nice, creamy frosting.)
