What should i cook for my wedding?!
Answers: My wedding is in May and we are having the recpetion and ceremony in my parents backyard. Its perfect. The only thing is i am trying to fihure out what type of dishes to cook. We are having about 70 ppl and are on a tigth budget so no catering. I dont want to go the route of asking ppl to bring dishes to my wedding because i think it is no classy. Well anyways i am wondering if anyone has any ideas on what i would be able to make the prior day or two and freeze until the day of. I will have a couple family members prepare the food on the day of so i wont have to. I already though of lasanga but am not set on it just yet.
31 years ago, I cooked for my wedding. The reception was at the beach, and everyone was encouraged to wear casual clothes and bring the kids.
I ordered chicken and whole catfish, and bushels of clams and mussels. The chicken were marinated in an icebox. The catfish were seasoned and skewered. The mussels and clams were packed in portions in foil.
Two long BBQ pits were laid out on the beach, and a wire mesh was placed on top. Each guest took chicken, fish, and packets of clams and mussels and placed these atop the wire mesh. A table offered dipping sauces.
For dessert, there were baskets of tropical fruit (bananas, starfruit, guavas, mangoes, papayas) and trays of sliced watermelons and pineapple.
Meat eaters copped off what they wanted from whole roasted pig.
We all ate off disposable plates, using plastic spoons and forks.
The trees along the beach were decorated with inexpensive, colorful kites from mainland Chinese shops in Hong Kong. At the end of the party, the guests were encouraged to take home the kites to hang in their living rooms.
I still have the receipts from that day. Our expenses totalled US$1,000. And that included my husband's hand-embroidered Barong Tagalog (formal Filipino national shirt) that he wore to our church ceremony.
I also bought the flowers from a wholesale market, made my own bouquet, and decorated the wedding car.
A friend volunteered to film the day in 16mm ektachrome. Another took pictures in black and white and color.
My husband died recently. We had 30 happy years together, longer than most couples who spent much, much more for their wedding.
Hope this makes you feel better about being on a budget for the most important day of your life.
FYI pasta is so messy. We had my daddy barbecue. we had chicken strips and hamburgers and deli sandwiches (walmart deli is cheap). If you have a membership to Sam's club or Costco go and get a big box of premade burger patties, tubs of condiments and a hoard of buns. Its not the most classy thing but I live in Kansas City and BBQ sauce runs in my veins. I had always dreamed of my dad cooking for my wedding and he was stoked to do it.
ok my husband wanted me to put this on here he said 'tell her beans and weiners that way you dont have to hire a band"
sorry LOL
seriously though have a bbq not steak but get hamburgers and fancy hotdogs instead of the plain old ordinary hot dogs. get steak burgers if you dont want to go with regular burgers.. that will feed alot of people you can get large orders of cole slaw ,potato or macaroni salad..
or what my aunt and uncle did for their wedding on a budget was order those HUGE sub sandwhiches that are precut and feed like 40 people at a time so you could get a couple of those and have some jello salad bunches of different style chips and dip vegetables with veggie dip etc......... most sub shops and giant eagle (depending on where you live might be called krogers or piggly wiggly) deli department makes these subs up on order....
by the way congratulations!!! my 18th year anniversary is coming up in april!
it really depends on what you like but i would recomend some baked ziti or kelbasi and saurkraut...or maybe some chicken marsala or franchais...any of those would be great...and congratulations on getting married!!!
You could do something fun like a mexican buffet. People can put their own tacos, burritos, nachos etc together. Maybe make one baked dish...like enchiladas. Serve some rice too...easy!
I recently got married and I'm a chef, so everyone kind of expected a great menu. My wife and I did a very Florida / Islander kind of reception so we decided on shish kabobs. It's a great way to take steak (which your guests will appreciate) and make it stretch with the veges that are placed between (which your pocketbook will appreciate). We used several fruit displays as edible centerpieces. Simply take a pineapple, core out the center, place a tall shot-glass into the hollow center, fill with water, and finally we placed live orchids within. Surround it with plenty of strawberries, grapes, cantaloupe, watermelon, etc. Other ideas: use a citrus-herb vinaigrette for salad, serve balsamic-glazed green beans as a side item, and please, please, please serve milk when you cut the cake. Cake does not go well with champagne, beer, wine, or soda ... gross. Would you dunk a cookie in pepsi? Why serve cake without milk?
Hope this helps & congratulations.
