What is the difference between Penne and Mostaccioli?!

Question: Is mostaccioli a type of noodle or is penne the type of noodle used to make the dish mostaccioli? If they are two different type of noodles, what is the difference?

penne is ridged and mostaccioli is not....in Italy mostaccioli is called penne lisce, so it's really a penne shape (angled at the end to look like a quill)

They are two different noodles. Penne is a shape, like a pen and is traditionally ridged. Mostaccioli is penne shaped but smooth.

you search the two at

Mostaccioli is a tube shaped pasta, with ridges, about 2" long. Penne is smaller, about 1/2" and is smooth unless using penne rigata. Pasta shapes get substituted occasionally and penne may be considered more bite sized by some. It will work in most mostaccioli recipes, but would be difficult to stuff with a filling.

noodles are noodles it just comes down to the shape of them.

one is for HIM and the other for HER... lol
