I make this one all the time so it might be similar to the one you had. Give it a try

Vanilla French Toast with Maple Whipped Cream
2 servings

My wife said she didn't like french toast until she tried this. Of course, she's a slight bit biased. The addition of fresh whipped cream made with real maple syrup makes for a real treat.

Mis en Place for French Toast:
6 eggs
1 Tbs vanilla extract
2 Tbs cinnamon
2 heaping tablespoons of fruit preserve
6 pieces thick cut white bread (it you can get your hands on an un-cut loaf and cut it yourself) or 8 slices Peppridge Farms White

Mis en Place for Whipped Cream:
1/2 Cup cold whipping or heavy cream
2 Tablespoons real maple syrup

Warm a nonstick skillet (or lightly buttered skillet) over medium low heat. In a large bowl beat the eggs with the vanilla and the cinnamon. Dredge both sides of the bread in the mixture and drop onto hot skillet. Cook until brown on one side, flip and brown the other side. If you cannot fit all the slices on one skillet, keep the other pieces warm in an oven set to 200¤.

For the whipped cream, in a cold bowl whip with a whip, hand mixer or stand mixer, whip the cream until it forms peaks when your whip is pulled from it. Add the maple syrup and continue whipping until combined and the whipped cream holds its peaks when the whisk it pulled from it.

Serve three or four on a plate and top with the whipped cream and heaping tablespoon fruit preserve.

Vanilla (sweet and dessert-like)

http://www.cooks.com/rec/doc/0,165,13417...

Vanilla, cinnamon, orange zest and some fresh squeezed juice from the orange added directly to the blended eggs. Adjust the ingredients to what you like. A recipe is not needed. Do as many eggs as you think you might need, two to four usually. Choose any bread, but day old bread is recommended as you do not want to saturate the bread. You only need to coat the bread. Cinnamon Challah bread is especially decadent. Dip the bread into the egg mixture and then fry on both sides in a pan coated with butter. Serve with warm REAL maple syrup and a dusting of powder sugar.

Some people inject mascarpone cheese (a soft cheese similar to cream cheese but softer and sweeter) into the bread before preparing.

Yum... Now I am thinking about it. Have fun with it!

sound like it might be bread pudding.....which is French toast one a larger scale.
Tear10-15pieces of bread in small chunks place in a well buttered pan....beat 5 eggs with 1 cup milk,1 tsp vanilla,1/2 cup sugar and a dash of cinnamon .pour mixture over the bread .Let set for 10 mins while the oven preheats to 350....cook for about 1/2 hour...

A variation....I grill bread slices in butter on both sides.before tearing them....can also add a topping of 1/2 cup flour/1/2 cup butter,3 table spoons sugar& dash of cinnamon.mix with your fingers till crumbly...and add to top/

must be this awesome dish!!

I have a really great and easy recipe for french toast although what you describe sounds more like a bread pudding.

French Toast

Thick sliced bread (Texas Toast style sliced)
1 Can Bordens Eggnog
Butter

Heat a nonstick fry pan or griddle on medium heat.

Using a pastry brush - brush both sides of the bread slices with the eggnog (or you can dip it if you like but don't saturate the bread too much).

Put a little butter in the pan and cook the bread slices as you would a grilled cheese sandwich. Brown the first side then flip it over (adding a little more butter to pan) and cook the other side.

The eggnog has all the seasonings already in it. It makes wonderful french toast.

You can top the french toast with what ever you want like
powdered sugar
strawberries
whipped cream and strawberries
Dip of ice cream
hot maple syrup

This recipe is so easy and you can't mess it up. Everyone will want your recipe. You can find the eggnog at the grocery stores all year long. It is usually located by the canned evaporated milk Good Luck

Very Vanilla French Toast

1 cup milk
1 (3 ounce) package vanilla pudding mix
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
8 slices thick bread
2 teaspoons butter or margarine
powdered sugar, if desired
Buttermilk Syrup
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 tablespoon light corn syrup
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

For syrup, melt butter in saucepan over medium heat. Add buttermilk, corn syrup, and sugar. Stir and bring to a boil. Cook, stirring constantly for 1 minute.
Remove from heat; add vanilla and baking soda. Syrup will be foamy. Let stand for 5-10 minutes.
Meanwhile, in a shallow dish, whisk together milk, pudding mix, egg, and cinnamon for 2 minutes or until well blended.
Melt butter on hot griddle or in a skillet. Dip bread in mixture, coating both sides.
Cook over heat for 2-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
Serve with syrup and powdered sugar or with fresh fruit and whipped cream.
Store leftover syrup in refrigerator.

Uhh call your cousin, if she came to your babyshower then I'm sure she will share a recipe.
