How can I tell when a potato has gone bad?!

Question: They have tiny little sprouts on them, and a few small white spots. Also, some of th skin came off when I scrubbed them clean. They feel a little spongy. Should I not be eating these?

you can eat them. they are not at their best, but if they are not oozing nasty brown liquid, they are edible

Ewwww. You can probably eat them, but I'd rather drive through a fast-food lane and order fries with...whatever.

I wouldnt eat them if they have gone soft. Sprouts are ok as you can cut them out, definitely dont eat them if they are green.

You can tell they go bad when they start smoking cigarettes, drinking beer, and hanging with the wrong crowd (usually turnips).

Potatoes are an inexpensive produce item. Toss these in the compost and buy some good ones.
=)

sounds like they're getting a little seedy. I've just torn off a few of the "sprouts" and eaten em. They're okay. But the spongy part sounds like they're going bad.

If they are spongey, smelly or visibly moldy, you should not eat them.

If a potato is bad............. believe me, you can smell it !!!!
If they are a little spongy, soak in ice water and they will
firm up again. Remove the sprouts.

the smell will tell you! Nothing worse smelling than a rotten potato!!!

They are eblible but use them right away. Either mash them or fry them.
