Sick and living alone. I want some ideas for cooking?!
Keep in mind, looking for something quick and easy, hot, comforting (fighting symptoms) and health issues (fighting cold). Also something that I am likely to have on hand or could have on hand next time would be a bonus.
Answers: I will probably call in sick to the office tomorrow. What do you cook for yourself when you have a cold, achy and stuffy?

If you have a Chinese place that delivers, order in a big container of wonton soup. The broth will make you feel better and not be so much work. Order extra and you can warm it up tomorrow.
Otherwise, you can always heat up a can of soup and have some toast or grilled cheese with it.
I also like to keep herbal tea on hand to sip and make my throat feel better.
Make sure to get some throat lozenges to soothe your throat and clear your nose.
Even if you're home alone, a friend will sometimes bring over some stuff if you need it. Don't be afraid to ask if you're feeling too terrible to get out and get what you need.
I always feel better with good ole potato soup or chicken noodle soup. Canned or homemade.
chicken soup sprinkles with white peppers. That helps to open up your stuffy nasal.
Grilled Cheese sandwhich
get 2 pieces of bread.
spread butter one 1 side of each piece

15 years old and love it soo mcuh
Chicken noodle soup.
I luv spicy food when I'm feeling under the weather, it really clears the sinuses.
I'd recommend Indian food or curry!
And of course, soup's always a good choice.
soup or broth. Cambells and something else has something called soup at hand where you literally put it in the microwave for a minute, take it out, put the lid on, and drink it. It is so good. It will help if you have a sore throat and water hurts. If water hurts to swallow because your throat is so soar, drink a bunch of water and then have a little bit of ice cream. The water it good for you and will help, and the ice cream will stop the hurting. Also try lollipops to help a sore throat. tea also helps, but if you, like me, don't like it, don't go to hot cocoa or coffee, the chocolate will just make things worse and absorb the little bit of liquid you have to work inside of you for fighting the cold. Good luck!
Lipton Lots of noodle soup. It's just chicken broth and noodles and you boil water and add the dry pouch and boil for 5 minutes. It's perfect when you are cold and feeling not so good. Feel better.
Ramen Noodles ... They have a lot of broth and the noodles are filling. Easy to make and keep on hand. If stuffy, add a couple of dashes of hot sauce or Tabasco to help clear congestion.
Quick and Super Easy Chicken and Dumplings
This is a great recipe for southern style chicken and dumplings. I just threw this together on a night I didn't feel like spending much time and energy on cooking.
PREP TIME 5 Min
COOK TIME 15 Min
INGREDIENTS
2 1/4 cups biscuit baking mix
2/3 cup milk
2 (14 ounce) cans chicken broth
2 (10 ounce) cans chunk chicken, drained
DIRECTIONS
In a medium bowl, stir together the biscuit mix and milk just until it pulls together. Set aside.
Pour the cans of chicken broth into a saucepan along with the chicken; bring to a boil. Once the broth is at a steady boil, take a handful of biscuit dough and flatten it in your hand. Tear off 1 to 2 inch pieces and drop them into the boiling broth. Make sure they are fully immersed at least for a moment. Once all of the dough is in the pot, carefully stir so that the newest dough clumps get covered by the broth. Cover, and simmer over medium heat for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally
I hope you have some chicken soup in the house. It's very soothing and helps clear out the sinuses. Oatmeal or poached eggs on toast are also good if your stomach is a bit queasy. Don't consume any dairy, that can cause further problems with stuffiness. Get some Sudafed (the stuff behind the pharmacy counter-not the other stuff, doesn't work nearly as well) for the stuffiness and to get your sinuses to drain, Advil for the body aches and if coughing Mucinex or Robitussin DM. I hope you feel better soon.
Do you have a crock pot? They're fabulous. They're not very expensive if you don't have one. Here's an idea. Put in 1 pound chicken breast (you can cut it up into bite sized pieces, or not. Your call.), half a cup of uncooked rice (not minute rice, the regular kind. Brown rice is healthier, if you like it.), 2 cans of black beans, and 1 jar of salsa (something spicy will clear out your nose, if you you can handle the medium or the hot kind). Stir it. Put the crock pot on Low and wait 8 hours. You've got dinner. It's ridiculously easy.
You'll have leftovers, too!
What you want is SPICE - modify your typical tomato or vegetable soup by adding cayenne, chili flakes, etc. - anything to get things "draining". Making beef vegetable? Add lots of black pepper!
Got instant mashed potatoes? Add lots of horseradish (freshly grated if you can get it - bottled if you can't) and eat it while it's hot.
Making a sandwich? A bottle of Arby's or Kraft Horseradish Sauce will really help - use it generously!!
Haven't got horseradish? No problem. Mix equal parts of buffalo wing sauce with ranch dressing and use it on sandwiches or as a dipping sauce for chicken fingers, nuggets, or tenders.
Order in HOT WINGS - believe me your chest congestion will begin to break up in no time.
Order in pizza made with hot peppers.
One of my fridge favourites is hot pickled vegetables. Also, you'll find a jar of pepperoncini peppers there too.
In between meals, make pot after pot of tea - pick your favourite flavour. You need the fluids and the tea will make your soul feel better too.
I hope you feel better!!
Softboiled eggs piled with Ritz crackers - easily digested. healthy cold fighting eggs (condensed chicken dinner) and nice salty crackers to settle a timid stomach.
Egg Soup - maybe it's just me cause this is my comfort food but I love this when under the weather:
Melt 1 Tablespoon butter in pan
Tear up two slices of toast into butter the coat toast with melted butter.
Break 2 eggs over the toast bits and mix around. Season with salt and pepper. Cook til no liquidy egg left.
Add about 1 cup of water. Simmer til water is all eggy and buttery. Pour into a bowl and enjoy.
Chicken noodle soup - scientists have found that chicken and chicken broth contains an enzyme that seems to help your body fight cold symptoms.
Herbal teas: if nothing else, the steamy heat cuts through the chest congestion but many believe certain herbs are actually immune boosting. Herbals have no caffeine to keep awake so you get your rest.
Cold-eeze: I thnk these work. They are a lozenger with a zinc supplement. Zinc is believed to boost immune system. Take as soon as you think getting sick and it won't last as long and I agree.
Honey: put it in the tea if you like tea sweet. It's also nice on fruit or crackers. Honey is believed by some to contain anti-bacterial properties. And is taste really good. It can also soothe a rough throat. Where's the bad?
well u could tried the oatmeal with hot chocolate or some pancakes =)
What does it for me is a large pot of vegetarian minestrone
soup. I start making it as soon as I feel that I'm, coming down with something. You know what I mean, when there is no one around to take care of the caregiver.
Here is the recipe
Take the pot that you are going to fill with the soup.
1/2 Spanish onion diced and start frying in a bit of olive oil
1 cup sliced mushrooms added to onion
2 carrots *par- cooked in the microwave then sliced and added
2 stalks of celery sliced and add
1/2 cabbage sliced and par cooked then add to pot
one zucchini diced and add
1 red or green pepper diced and add
2 potatoes diced and add
2 cans of baked beans or kidney beans for your protein
1 large can of diced tomatoes add 1/2 tsp garlic powder
12-16 cups of water
8-9 tsp or more beef soup base for flavor
1 tbsp honey
Now this is a big pot of soup for days of feeding you.
When done pour into holding canister and refrigerate for the next few meals.
Hope to get you better with some nourishing soup.
* par- cooking means to place into microwave and slightly get a head start on the slow foods to add to pot
Cook on medium slowly for 1 hour with lid placed to let out steam.
toasted cheese and tomato soup
butter one side of bread cook in frying pan add american cheese top with 2nd slice of bread also buttered on outside
flip when browned
empty can of soup add 1 cup milk mix and heat
i dip sandwitch in soup yumm!!!
Soup is wonderful like everyone said. I would also suggest you make some ginger tea. It will clear you up and help you sleep. Cut and peel a 1 inch piece of ginger into small pieces and put in a pot with one cup of water. Let it come to a boil then simmer for about 10 min. Strain and sweeten with honey. It does wonders! The Chinese have used it for centuries. Good luck and hope you feel better soon!
BTW- don't eat anything too greasy because that will just upset your stomach. If you do eat soup try to get the low sodium one.
I like Cream of Wheat when I am sick and achy....Also, oatmeal with raisins, brown sugar and cinnamon and any dried fruit you may have on hand. And toast.
It doesn't take much time to whoop it up and it is good for you and filling and hot and stays with you...
Fix up a Hot Toddy before you go to bed.....Hot tea with 1Tbl lemon, 1tbl honey and a shot of brandy.....drink it down as hot as you can...and go to bed.
Chicken soup(scientist say something about the broth helps us feel better), 7-up or coke (settles your tummy), jello made with 1/2 water and 1/2 7-up. Things that you might want to keep on your shelves for when you are sick are also crackers, gateraid (if you have diarhea)and dry toast, if you don't like chicken soup, get some other kind.
If you have a Chinese or Thai restaurant that delivers, you could order one of their soups or get garlic dish with a veggie and meat. The garlic ones help with sinus infections, to feel better.
Get Well and Take care,
DD
Here is a very quick soup. Use either chicken that is left over or is cooked and chopped, or a few slices of lunch meat.
If using chicken then chop some veggies that you may have on hand or look in the freezer or cupboard for what you have. Boil a couple cups of water and add the veggies, and some chicken base. Add other seasonings you like. If you want noodle add them now (or after the veggies are almost done). When the veggies and noodles are done then add the chicken, keep cooking until the meat is hot.
If you have lunch meat or even hamburger cook the burger scrambled up and set aside or if using lunch meat slice into strips and then cut the strips in half length wise. And use beef base instead of chicken base untill you have turkey meat. Make the soup as directed for the chicken one.
I used to make the lunch meat and noodle variety for my kids for a quick lunch but with out the veggies.
Add some crackers or toast and you have a full meal.
Or chili is always good too.
I hope u r in Malaysia as I saw yr q while on Malaysia only questions. If you can get to a pharmacy, look for Panadol for Cold Relief. In Malaysia you need to get over the pharmacy counter but in Singapore it's on the shelves and even in 7-eleven. Works great 4 me and usually full recovery within 24 to 36 hours. Oh yeah!, Get the non-drowsy formula. Seroiusly, it's the best thing. Hope u get well soon. Follow the instructions and dun overdose!! Take care.
????
Green Tea with mint & honey is the best!!!! Also buy a jar of vitamin C tablets to have on hand...they are awesome!!!! Also B-12 is great to have on hand too! As far as sick food goes....warm and comforting is tomato soup with grilled cheese to dip in it...top the soup with anything from sour cream to cheddar cheese to jalapenos!!! I think I want to call in sick now too! Yummy!
soup and tea
Hey,... try some dorito dip! It's easy! Brown a pound of ground meat, mix it with 1 can of cream of mushroom, 1 can of rotel tomatos, and 1 can of ranch style beans. Dip away with some Doritos. Sounds gross, tastes GREAT!!! It is warm so it keeps you cozy and it is better than soup. The spices in the rotel helps your nasal passages drain so keep a few tissues handy and don't let them drip in your bowl...EWW.
for a good time:

I agree, Chicken and Dumplings. This recipe is from Sandra Lee, Semi-Homemade Cooking on Food Network
1 whole store-bought roast chicken (about 2 pounds)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 container (7 ounces) chopped onions
6 cans (14 ounces) low-sodium chicken broth
1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground pepper
1 container (14 ounces) pre-cut carrot sticks, chopped
1 container (14 ounces) pre-cut celery sticks, chopped
1 roll (16.3 ounces) golden buttermilk biscuit dough
1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed chicken gravy
Remove skin from chicken and shred meat into large pieces. Set aside.
In a small frying pan, add vegetable oil and heat over medium heat. When oil is hot, add chopped onions and saute until soft.
In a large pot or Dutch oven, add broth, poultry seasoning, salt, pepper, carrots, celery, and sauteed onions. Bring to a boil. Reduce to simmer for about 10 minutes to soften vegetables, and then add shredded chicken. Continue to simmer while making dumplings.
While stew is simmering, prepare dumplings. Open can and remove biscuits. On a lightly floured surface, roll each biscuit to 1/4-inch thick. With a knife, cut each biscuit into 4 pie-pieces. Set aside.
Skim surface for any scum that has risen to top. Stir in chicken gravy.
With the stew still simmering over low heat, stir in dumplings a few at a time. Once all dumplings are in to pot, cover with a tight fitting lid and cook for 10 minutes.
Ladle into bowls and serve piping hot.
