I'm not a huge fan of cabbage, but I LOVE it in asian food. Spring rolls, wraps, cabbage & lettuce with ginger dressing are all delicious. Do an Internet search and I'm sure you can find tons of asian recipes that utilize cabbage.
This is a great, and unusual salad:
Caesar Coleslaw
1 pkg pre-made coleslaw
1/4-1/2 cup shredded parmesean cheese
1/2 pkg caesar croutons
1 bottle creamy caesar dressing
Toss first three ingredients together. Add enough dressing to coat. It's even good the next day!
I really like cabbage so the simpler the recipe, the better I like it. I do like cabbage rolls and cabbage soup. But the best I ever had was at a Japanese couples house. They took an entire head of cabbage and peeled off a layer or two of leaves. They banged the head (core side down) against the counter top, and pulled out the core. Cut the head into 8 wedges and boil with a little salt and pepper, and perhaps 1/4 of an onion finely diced. It was boiled for perhaps 10 minutes max. Serve it as a side vegetable. Put a little olive oil or butter on it and eat it "neat". It's warmed through, but is crunchy and has the essence of simple cabbage. The closest American equivalent is the traditional St. Patrick's day meal. Corned beef and cabbage. If the cabbage isn't overcooked, it comes kind of close to the way the Japanese couple cooked it.
My Fav Cabbage is Fried Cabbage
to Serve 2 you need...
about a good half head of cabbage shredded or sliced thin
Butter and olive oil to fry it up
1 onion chopped or sliced....whatever you want to do to that onion.....
1 apple...your choice (doesn't matter the color) skin on and chopped
If you have bacon....cook er up and crumble it...add the butter pat and drizzle of olive oil to the bacon grease When it is all hot...dump in the onion and apple...fry that up brown...then lay on the cabbage stir it up to coat the cabbage with the oils. Plop on the lid of the pan turn the fire to med high and let it go for about 3-5 minutes....Turn or stir it if you think it might burn...brown is good black is not... That is it...when the cabbage is browned it is ready to eat.....When I make this for my Husband an Son I have to make a whole head of cabbage...they cant stop eating it...and never is any left....
