Why are chips unhealthy? its a vegetable cooked in vegetable oil, so it should be healthy..?!

Question: I always cook my chips in vegetable oil and I always have success, but according to Jamie Oliver the healthiest way is to cook chips in either Olive oil, or Rapeseed oil as an alternative. This is due to the polyunsaturates etc. in the oil. Olive oil is too expensive to use for cooking in a deep fat fryer so I am going to try Rapeseed oil in the near future.
When the oil cooks the chipped potato, it penetrates the surface and cooks the inside till soft. It's this penetration of fat that is bad for you that is why some people say about par boiling first to cook the inside. The penetration is done by water and not oil, so although it maybe the healthiest it is not necessarily the tastiest.

apart from the salt.

Life's unfair, isn't it.

and you can run your car on the oil afterwards! Everyones a winner!

Healthiest way of cooking chips...
chip potato, part boil, place on baking tray, spray with one cal oil and oven bake 30mins
Mmmm tasty and reasonably healthy!!

the best way to cook chips that are as healthy as they get is to chip the potatos, boil them for about 5-10 mins then drain them place them on a baking tray and oven til nice and crispy (or however you want them) 0% fat 100% healthy

It depends which vegetable oil is used. Oils like rapeseed are much lower in harnfull materials than others.

Too much salt, too much cholesterol, no real food value.

It depends on having the oil at the right temperature so that it seals the potato and doesn't soak in, then drain onto kitchen
paper to adsorb any excess; for those of you using the
oven method, I don't see the need to parboil first I just cut
the potatoes into slices (UNPEELED) spray with a little oil
30 minutes at gas 9, Bingo! perfect brown chips or scollops
in Yorkshire.

its got alot of salt in it

oil is still bad and they soak it up

Becuase they're fried and have tons of trans-fat and salt. But, not all chips are bad. There are baked chips now that are a whole lot healthier.

DOOD! IT'S SALTED!
