What is the best way to cook steak without a grill or broiler?!

Question: What is the best way to prepare and cook a steak (maybe a filet) without a grill? I live in an apartment and cannot have a grill, and the broiler under my older oven gets too hot and is unevenly heated. I enjoy cooking, but steak is something I rarely attempt at home. Any suggestions or good experiences?

(check out the popular electric table top grills, they can be picked up at stores such as WalMart, Target, etc)

We use the stove top as per the following:

Three Easy Steps To Stove-Top Skillet Cooking
(Pan-Broiling, Sautéing)

Heat heavy nonstick skillet over medium heat for 5 minutes. Do not add oil or water; do not cover.

Season beef straight from the refrigerator with herbs or spices, as desired. Not salt.

Place in preheated skillet. Do not overcrowd. Do not add oil or water; do not cover.

Cook 4 minutes each side for rare
More for medium or well-done

After cooking, season beef with salt, if desired.

You can do it in a skillet on top of your stove. A little evoo & moderately high heat. 7 minutes on one side & 5 on the other is a pretty good guideline for a medium rare steak. Adjust according to thickness & personal preference.

Try topping it with a chunk of bleu cheese or butter mixed with fresh herbs, YUM!

In a hot skillet.I brown mine first then put in oven (covered) an hr. on 350 degrees and eat. With A! it tast kinda like the grilled ones I love so much. I too live in an Apt. and must move in May just to get my grill fired up again. I miss it so much.( I use charcol for that down home flavor here in Tennessee).LOL

Pan roast it, which means you sear the meat in a frying pan on the stove top and then transfer it to the oven. Fabu!

Move the rack down from the heat source more? Broilers rarely get too hot. But you don't have to keep the tray at the top of the rack.

Ok, cut the steak into serving size pieces. dredge in 1 c flour, 1 c corn starch, 1 tablespoon each salt, white pepper and oregano. And fry in olive or canola oil in skillet.

serving size pieces = bar of soap or about 3 to 4 ounces each
steak fingers = 1 inch x 4 inches and longer
steak bites = 1 inch x 1 inch

Pan broil? melt stick of butter in covered dutch oven. put the steak in the melted butter for 10 minutes per side and keep covered, cook at medium heat.

What you need is a really good cast iron skillet. Heat it first on the stove top with a little olive oil and drop that steak on. 5 minutes on the first side, flip it and 4 minutes on the other. Medium . Depending on the thickness. Add some Italian herbs to the oil. Gives it a good flavor.

Slice it thin and stir fry it.

you may consider asking for a flat electric grill , if the steaks are for him that is . push come to shove i'll bet he'd rather have it that way than pan fried all the time .

get a George Foreman grill they are to be used in the house and food tastes great on them ......drains the fat away, it cooks the best steak and burgers....got mine at Walmart!
