Does anyone know how to make smoothies....?!
However, I've tried a couple of times to make the recipes in the book and I always seem to end up spending a LOT. Yesterday I went to Tesco, bought half of the ingredients for a recipe and realised that it had already come to £10 and I hadn't even bought the expensive ingredients AND the recipe only yields two glasses!!
It seems to me that the cheaper (and better tasting option) is to just buy smoothies already made. Even though they're incredibly expensive too! That was the reason I bought the blender in the first place! Has anyone actually found any good recipes that are cheaper than just buying them already bottled?
Answers: ...without going bankrupt? I bought a blender and a recipe book a few months ago thinking I could benefit my health and save money by making myself a daily fruit smoothie.

Well, I don't know what kind of smoothie you were making, but smoothies are REALLY cheap to make!
You will need fruit, yogurt, juice, ice cubes, milk, and possibly other ingredients depending on the recipe. You usually don't even need all of those things that I listed above.
Here are a few recipes that are cheap:
Breakfast Replacement Smoothie
Trying to get out the door in the morning and eat a good breakfast is a tough combination, so finding a good smoothie combination to help me is a good idea. Well, I like Grape Nuts cereal and I like to mix it in yogurt and eat it with lunch or for a snack. So why not blend it into a breakfast smoothie? So I did.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup Grape Nuts cereal
1/2 cup vanilla yogurt (low-fat)
1 cup ice
1 banana
2 cups juice (orange, apple or whatever you like. I wouldn’t mind trying pineapple in this)
Blend and feel the energy!
Purple Cow Smoothie (Grape)
Sometimes it can be tough to find good grapes, especially during the winter months in Viriginia, so using grape concentrate in place of grapes is a good idea for a grape smoothie recipe.
Ingredients:
2 cups vanilla ice cream (that’s the cow part)
8 tbs. frozen grape juice concentrate (I like Welch’s and this is the purple part)
1 cup of milk (also the cow part)
1 cup of ice
Blend and enjoy.
Green Envy Avocado Smoothie
I absolutely love avocadoes and adding them to a smoothie is something I never thought of before. But I’m all about trying something new and how bad could it be? Well, it was excellent and the avocado adds a creamy texture you don’t find in smoothies usually. Try this avocado smoothie and surprise it on your friends. They’ll be amazed it was made from avocado.
Ingredients:
2 bananas
2 cups orange juice
1 cup of strawberries (preferably fresh, but frozen will do)
1 cup of orange or strawberry sherbet
1 cup ice
1 avocado, peeled and pitted
Danielle G Smoothie Recipe
The key is putting slightly more pineapples than strawberries, and because the fruit is frozen you dont need ice. Tastes great and very healthy!!
Ingredients:
2 1/2 to 3 cups of Welch’s strawberry Breeze Juice (or fill blender little less than half way full)
2 1/2 hand fulls of Dole’s frozen pineapples
1 1/2 to 2 hand fulls of Dole’s frozen whole strawberries
3 squirts of clover honey
Preparation:
Mix in blender on high for a few seconds. Serves 2 large cups.

2 tbs. instant chocolate pudding powder
1 cup cream soda (yep, cream soda)

ice cubes, make yourself, icecream £1 a tub, and fruit how much is that gonna cost you? £4 tops!
Just put some yogurt and fruit in the blender with a bit of milk...BAM smoothie, sometimes you can even use ice cream to make it more milkshakey
Hi, yeh i noticed it can rack up a fair bill! however, tescos is expensive - ish! you can chuck anything in a smoothie. i find the best base is natural yoghurt, pineapple juice..then throw in a banana and handful of strawberries....you could end up spending loads on blueberries, blackberries n all that! wait til summer when you can pick ur own for very little. just chuck in any fruit u can find on special offer at the mo.
Frozen raspberries fresh strawberries and apple juice.
Fear not - cheap and tasty
You need
2 scoops fruit flavor frozen sorbet (this is the secret ingredient that makes it work)
1 scoop vanilla frozen Yoghurt (much healthier than ice cream)
1 bag frozen fruit blend (In the freezer aisle - you can get mixes like mellon, mango, strawberries or blackberries, rasberries, red berries). They are inexpensive, healthy and varied.
Add a dash of milk
Add a dash of OJ if you have it available
Add some ice
Blend Blend Blend. and Voila.
Squirt some cream on top.
Basically the secret is the frozen sorbet and the frozen bag of mixed fruit. One bag of mixed fruit will make 3-4 smoothies and the sorbet, ice cream will make loads and loads of smoothiies, so works out cheap.
try blend together apples, bananas ,oranges ,ice cubes with some yoghurt or ice cream.uhnn! yummy!
i just make simple ones.
strawberry milkshake strawberry, milk,ice cream
banana banana,milk,ice cream
some various fruit fruit juice ice, ice, assorted fruit
Not that costly!
Bananas are the secret.
Buy yourself a bag of frozen strawberries. Here in the states you can get a large bag of Dole strawberries for about $8. This is the most expensive ingredient.
Put about 1 cup of strawberries, two bananas (broken into pieces), 1 cup of plain yogurt and a dash of fruit juice (just enough to make the blender blend). Voila, a great strawberry banana smoothie.
I use this everyday while I'm losing weight. The non-fat yogurt works as well as regular.
The secret is using fruit that is locally produced and in season as this will always be a lot cheaper. So get down to the nearest 'pick your own' in the summer. Some ingredients such as bananas obviously have to be imported but the fruit and veg stall at your local market will almost certainly be cheaper than the big supermarkets. If you must use out of season fruit then frozen is usually cheaper than fresh imported. Plus while saving money you're also reducing the carbon footprint of your smoothy too!
I make smoothies all the time out of frozen fruit, (especially berries..strawberry, blueberry, and raspberry), milk, and yogurt. Doesn't cost much at all.
Great cheap option using Tesco is to get to the frozen section and buy either whatever is on offer or the summer or forest fruits selections and a big tub of natural live yoghurt (I like 'Rachaels'). About half a tub of yoghurt to a third of a punnet of fruit. Dead easy, dead tasty and great for making at least a couple of your daily five. Sometimes I add a squirt of honey, sometimes some vanilla protein powder if I've been going mad on my bike or at the gym.
Also the tropical fruit one makes a great slushie, but with a bit of fruit juice, not yoghurt.
Freezing fruit doesn't harm the nutrients or taste, but it can make them a bit mushy, but that doesn't matter in smoothies.
Enjoy!
All-Around Good Smoothie
INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup nonfat milk
1/2 cup fat-free plain yogurt
1/2 frozen banana, peeled and chopped
2 tablespoons powdered protein supplement
1 1/2 tablespoons flax seed
1 teaspoon honey
1/2 cup frozen strawberries
DIRECTIONS
In a blender, blend the milk, yogurt, banana, protein supplement, flax seed, honey, and strawberries until smooth.
When your bananas get a bit too ripe to eat (or maybe you like them that way) freeze them, peeled and in pieces in a freezer bag.
Take about 1 banana per glass of smoothie, all you need to do is add milk and frozen banana. Blitz until smooth. It does the job of an ice cube as well. You can add a little vanilla/sugar if you wish.
Another instant one but it's best done in the summer when mangoes are in season: go to an Indian store and get some mangoes. They're cheaper and far superior to the South American variety in most supermarkets. Peel and remove the stone, blitz in the blender with some milk and ice cubes.
You can also get alphonso (the Indian variety) mango in cans out of season.
Strawberry and Mango Smoothie
100g (3+ a half oz) of strawberries ( stalks removed).
Half a mango,peeled and chopped
4tbsp natural, low fat yogurt
1 tsp vanilla essence
200ml (7oz) skimmed milk
2 ice cubes (optional).
Serves 1 - Takes 5 minutes
Reserve 1 strawberry and a slice of mango for decoration, (if you want to). Blitz the rest of the fruit, along with yogurt, vanilla essence and milk in a blender for 15-20 seconds, until smooth.
Pour into a glass, add the ice cubes and top with reserved fruit.
DELUXE RASPBERRY AND BANANA.
makes one serving:
100g frozen raspberries
1 small banana, peeled
100 ml unsweetened pineapple juice, chilled
2 tbsp crushed ice
2 tbsp low fat natural yogurt
3tsp wheat germ
1 tsp honey
Place all ingredients in a blender and process until smooth. Pour into a tall glass and serve.
These are just two suggestions to give you an idea. Just follow these simple guides and then you can start making what you want. Mixing and matching all your favourite fruits.
I buy a bag of frozen summer fruit and use that;
1 banana
1 fruit yoghurt
1 yoghurt carton of milk/soya milk/water
1 large handful frozen fruit
I add a little sweetener and vanilla extra. Sometime I just use yoghurt, milk, banana and mixed spice to make a 'banana cake' flavoured smoothie.
put 2 scoops of icecream,2 handfulls of frozen mixed fruit, fill with half of skimmed milk half ways and 2 icecubes, and blitze for a short time, that should be plenty for you and no waste, and living healthier.
Mmmmmmmmmmmm i think ill go and make one now.!!
