Make a heart-shaped cake??!

Question: I want to make a simple heart-shaped cake without a mold. I have molds for little heart-shaped cakes, but I want to make a large one. How would I go about doing that? Like, start with a rectangle or square pan, bake it, use a corner for the bottom of the heart and cut the curves, or what??? Any easy ways to do it??

Step One
Prepare your favorite cake mix or batter, making sure you have enough for a two-layer cake.

Step Two
Put half of the batter in the square cake pan and half of the batter in the round cake pan. Bake as directed and let cool.

Step Three
Prepare a platter, cookie sheet or cardboard base for the cake. It should measure about 15 by 15 inches. Cover with aluminum foil or paper doilies as desired.

Step Four
Place the square layer on the platter so that one corner faces down at the bottom of the platter, forming a diamond shape.

Step Five
Cut the round layer in half, then place the cut side of each half of the round layer against one upper side of the square layer to form a one-layer heart.

Step Six
Frost the cake, using frosting to cover the seams.

Step Seven
Decorate the cake as desired. Consider using colored decorating sugar, candy conversation hearts, red hots or other decorating candies.

Hope all goes well!! Good Luck!!

I made a Heart cake last year without a mold--yeah I just used a silicone 12 by 12 or 13 by 13 inch pan and made a square cake. Then I let it cool and cut it with a huge pastry/cake knife into the shape. It was a little tough, but you can do it.

I would recommend getting a heart shaped mold at a craft store or even a heart shaped large "cookie" cutter to help you cut the big heart. GOOD LUCK!

Why not just make a round cake, and pipe an icing heart on top. If you go and cut a cake into a heart shape, you'll have a hard time icing the "bare" cake that doesn't have a baked edge that is firm.

Heart-shaped pans are cheap, BTW....

bake a round cake and a square cake...standard size...I usually use a boxed cake mix and pour 1/2 the batter into each pan, Like a 8" or 9" round and a 8" or 9" square
Once done and cooled cut round cake in 1/2, situate the sqaure one to look like a diamond, place each half of the round cake, cut side, to adjacent sides of the sqaure one...there you have it...a heart....It's very easy to do..

Yes, to above. But use parchment so when you turn out your 13x9 cake it comes out cleanly and doesn't break. Cut out a pattern of a large heart shape use it to trace off on one end of cake, trim off the heart patterns pointed bottom to use on the end part of cake for the point. I use this method all the time...good luck.

take a small 8 x 8 square pan and an 8 inch round pan cut the 8 inch round in half and then position it on the square to create the heart shape. use a little frosting to cement the pieces together and frost and decorate.. Have fun.

what you could do is draw a large heart on a piece of paper or cardboard and cut it out. use this as a template and find the pan that will have the least amount of remnants. Use a sharp knife and your template and carve your cake!

Good Luck!

Bake a cake in another large pan and then freeze it for at least 2 hours. Then you can cut it into any shape you want pretty easily. Ice it with a thin layer first, wiping the crumbs off the knife. This seals in all the crumbs from the edges you cut. Then you can ice it thick without it being crumby and ugly.
