Can I use all purpose flour as a thickening substitute for corn starch?!
Answers: A chicken recipe calls for corn starch as a thickening agent for the sauce Can I use all purpose flour to the same effect?
1 Tbsp cornstarch equals 2 Tbsp flour. Mix the flour with cold water (just enough to dissolve it) before you add it to the hot food mixture.
Yes, it will thicken fine. The sauce won't be quite as clear as cornstarch, however. If that's ok, go for it. Be sure to stir the dry flour it into COLD water, not warm or hot.
Yes.
yep.
Yes you can but before adding it to what ever you want to thicken mix it with cold water and slowly pour into dish or it will clump up and white blobs will float to the top, not pretty.
yes you can use flour.
I'd recommend that you mix the flour with a little butter or oil so the flour doesn't clump into little balls when you add to the hot liquid. This is called a beurre manie.
Also, when you use corn starch you know how thick the liquid will be when it comes to a boil while flour can contintue to thicken.
Yes, most always do.
yes you can. HOWEVER, there is something MUCH MUCH BETTER. It is called Wondra. It can be found in your baking isle. It is in a tall blue canister. You can add Wondra to ANYTHING to thicken it. It will not clump, you dont need to add water, and you wont need to make a rue (when you cook down flour and a fat - such as butter or oil - and cook it shortly to add to another dish to make thicker). Wondra is CHEAP. I have actually introduced this to four or five of my friends. My mother - who is not a big cook - use to use it and introduced me to it. YOU WILL LOVE IT. You can use it with sauces and soups, dishes and sides. ANYWHERE!!
