Why is white bread considered to be unhealthy?!

Question: Because of the processing of the flour to make white bread it is considered a refined carbohydrate, unlike its less processed relations brown/wholewheat/grannery. Refined carbohydrates are more quickly digested by the body and broken down into sugars, this can cause an insulin spike in the blood stream. This insulin spike can cause you to store calories as fat more easily. This process goes for most refined/sugary foods and can cause 'ups' and 'downs' in your energy levels, more complexe carbohydrates break down slower give a more sustained energy release and a longer feeling of 'fullness'. The processing involved also strips most of the fibre and nutrients from the bread.

The flour is bleached.

Whole grain is better on the digestitve system... white bread has the type of carbs that could lead to diabetes if eaten too much... an extreme amount at least...

No fiber and because of the bleach that is used.

Whole wheat is the best!

All white bread has the flour "bleached" white!

I think it is just because brown bread is more healthy. We all need carbohydrates.

Its made out of processed flour which doesn't have any nutritional value.

I once read about a study that claimed that the diabetes rates of specific countries skyrocketed after white flour was introduced.

It is not considered whole grain which contains most of the vitamins you need and fiber. the white is refined and adulterated to make a smooth product. doing this extracts all the good for you stuff.

I personally don't think white bread is unhealthy - AT ALL.

I just think it's a load of old "OBLLOCKS" to get you to pay out more for brown.

Who wants that sh!te when there's always bird seed and all sorts of cr@p in it?

If you like white - - - like me.......ENJOY..........XXX

It's all carbs and turns to sugar once in your system.

We all need carbohydrates in our diet, but there are 2 types, simple and complex. Complex carbs give us fiber, and take longer to digest, giving our bodies fuel for a sustained period of time. Simple carbs digest too quickly. They turn into sugar once they enter our body, spiking our blood sugar levels. White bread is a simple carb.

is this a racist question are you comparing white rolls to black ones

Bleached flour, lack of fibre. Addatives to keep it 'fresh'. Tastelessness. Bulks you up.

processed flour turns to sugar in your system and there is no fiber in white flour (or rice).

Its Bleached

because you can use it to clean the walls in your house

Just because there is nothing of "value" in it, I wouldn't say it's necessarily bad, just not good. You know? Don't worry eat what you like i say. (Within reason! don't go down a cup of crisco lol)

I'm not sure I'd call it "UNhealthy" but it's not the "healthiest" choice because it lacks the nutritoin and fiber of whole grains like whole wheat bread has.

Hi,

The site Women's Fitness explains that "highly processed white flour (alias "enriched wheat flour" or "wheat flour") is missing the two most nutritious and fiber-rich parts of the seed: the outside bran layer and the germ (embryo)."

White bread is a refined low-fiber starchy food and is therefore digested and absorbed very quickly. This causes a rapid increase in blood sugar levels.

According to a source I found, "White flour is almost pure starch. It mixes easily with saliva in the mouth and breaks down rapidly into sugars. As soon as the digested starch reaches the small intestine, a huge surge of sugars passes into the bloodstream. Insulin is produced rapidly to control it and the liver is put under stress to process the surplus."

Eventually, over time, if your body is working to process large and rapid sugar loads, you may be at increased risk for developing diabetes.

So, to sum it up, you may be better off eating whole grains and avoiding refined starches. It's generally a good idea to avoid eating highly processed foods. But, as always, it's a good idea to check with a doctor.

Mike

Because there is no fibre, as a rule but we have "Fibre Rich White" so I eat that. Yum.

It lacks fibre.

White bread contains primarily simple carbohydrates which, once broken down by your body's enzymes, turn into simple sugars.
