The best cupcakes can be done by following the recipe from a ready to bake cup cake box (ie: Betty Crocker) and then adding some more flare to it.
Use cream cheese into the mix and it will soften and make the cup cake more moist. As for icing, I don't like the ready made and tend to dilute this up a bit by using a mixer and adding whip cream before spreading. Many dessert shops that sell those pretty cup cakes have cream cheese as the special ingredient to take their treats up a notch. Enjoy experimenting!
Check out the Cupcakes section of www.myflourgarden.com which offers lots of "off the beaten path" flavors, as well as classic cupcake flavors. Also available in several sizes including high-hat and jumbo/king-size cupcakes!

allrecipes.com is a good one. there rated to so you can see how good of a recipe they are.
get a box-simple and quick
but some tips are instead of oil (no matter how much oil it calls for) use a stick of butter, and instead of water use milk, it makes all cakes better
also for cakes line the bottom with parchment paper and u don't have to oil it and it works great
