Which would you buy?? Softback cookbook $8 or hardback for $10??!

Hardcover. They are more durable. You can wipe spills off of them, and they look nicer.

if you can afford it in your margin - HARD COVER. It just looks richer.

If they both open flat so they can be easily viewed while cooking, then I would go with hardback. I own about 150 cookbooks and about 80% are hardback.

I personally prefer hardback. However, if they don't stay open or if the cook doesn't have a cookbook holder, they can be a major pain in the butt once you are involved in a recipe, with your hands a mess, and the book shuts on you. =) That is the 1 flip side to a paperback.

I would say hardback, because for normal books the hardback cost a lot more than the softback, but here's it's not really the case, so it's really a good deal and the people who buy them will be satisfied. Also, hardcovers will last longer.

I prefer the hardback that have the spiral cover because they stay open on the counter better.
