Here's one:
BLAND DINNER
1 piece of meat (mutton, fish, whatever)
2 potatoes, scrubbed and washed
1 tsp of whatever tasteless powder you have laying about
1 pint of lager
Boil the meat, making sure to overcook it until it's dry and tasteless. DO NOT add any seasoning! Once it's tough as shoe leather and tastes like a ream of paper, cook the meat about 15 minutes longer.
Add the dry, tasteless powder (whatever it is) to the meat. This doesn't actually make it taste any better, but you can tell your mates that you "cooked" and "put effort into it."
Boil the potatoes about 5 minutes less than is necessary for them to be properly cooked. Dice them and place them on the plate with the meat. Pour some of the potato water onto the plate too.
Drink the lager down before trying to eat the main course. Trust me. You'll need it.
Serves 6, because nobody wants very much of it.

The most popular in this household is Cottage Pie.
Peel, boil and smash 2lbs potato. Cream with a few knobs of butter.
Brown 2lbs of beef mince. Stir in a couple of large onions, diced. Fry the mix until the onion softens and goes golden. Add a couple of cups of water, or, better still, 1/2 a can of Best Bitter/Guinness............ slurp the rest!
Bring to the boil.
Add 3 large sliced carrots and a few handfuls of finely sliced greens (I use spinach)
Now you can either cheat, with a packet of Cottage/Shepherds Pie mix,or:
1tspn ground ginger
1/4tspn ground pepper
2 cubes of beef stock
Shove the seasoning in and simmer.
Thicken with some gravy granules and simmer until the carrots are softening.
(I like to add a few sliced mushrooms at this stage)
Take a deep casserole dish and spread the beef mixture in the bottom. Layer the creamed potato on top and place in a 220deg.C pre-heated oven until the top of the potato browns.
Stand back, or be killed in the rush for this comfort food!
The dish can be embellished by a generous covering of grated cheese, which is baked for another 10 mins. (eeugh!)
The good old shepherds pie is made with minced mutton instead of the beef.
