I took a six pound package of hamburger out of the freezer?!

Question: yesterday to thaw for BBQ hamburgers for today's Super Bowl. It's hardly thawed! The package is too big for a baggie to put in the sink in some water, should I just put it in the sink in the package it's in? I've never had this happen before.

It will hardly thaw in 1 day from freezer to fridge. For rapid thaw cold water in the sink. NEVER use warm water as you activate all the lil bacterias that wanna thrive and make us sick.Next time try taking it out 3 days before hand or lest try to remember..lol ive done this many times. So by 1-2 you should be able to cook it up and make the Burgers as you will. Good luck and use a big skillet.

Try breaking it and then putting it in a few bags. Remember, if putting in water, it's only cold water. Otherwise, make sure it's covered well, and, although not a recommended way of thawing ANY meat or fish, leave it out and watch it carefully. You don't want it to get to room temperature. Ideally, all meats should be thawed IN the refrigerator, not at room temperature for less chance of bacteria forming.

You can leave is sit out especially if it is still that frozen. I would put it in a big bowl and try to remove the thawed areas, put them at the bottom of the bowl and keep trying to break it up as it continues to thaw.
I have also cooked it partially frozen on very low heat.
Be sure to drain well, as there will be added water content.

yes, just run cold water on the package a keep rotating until thawed

I agree with what the first person said, you have to be so careful or you'll give everyone food poisoning, but if you follow Haven's advice, you should be okay. Do not leave it sitting out as someone suggested, bacteria will start to multiply rapidly at room temperature, even if part of it is still frozen.

I agree with the first person completely, but wanted to add that you can always cook it from frozen if you change the menu to sloppy joes. In a pinch, that would be a good backup plan.

Is any of it defrosted? I'd try to break it down a bit into smaller chunks if you can. If you have a non-stick skillet, griddle, etc something with a black teflon surface, put the meat in that and leave it out on a counter. A few hours out won't hurt it since you're cooking it later today, just be sure you grill it to the right temp. Don't ask me why putting it in the pan like this works, but it does accelerate the defrosting. Just turn it over every once in a while and keep breaking it up.

I would defrost the meat in the microwave on the Defrost setting (not full power) - breaking it up & turning as you go.
