Is it safe to bake in terra cotta pots? The ones for gardening?!

Question: I'm thinking of doing cupcakes in the small pots from your local garden supply store.

Since I have done this more than a dozen times, I would say it is ok to bake in a terra cotta pot. BUT, you need to buy a NEW one, sterilize it by washing/scrubbing it with soap dish and water, put it in the oven for 2 hours at 200 degrees.. let it cool, them VOILA ! it is safe... BUT, you need to line the whole inside with foil tightly before you pour your cake. Don't forget to spray with cake release from Wilton. Marthat Stewart did this once on her TV show.

As long as they've never had plants in them and as long as you wash them well first (and let them dry completely), they're perfectly safe.

Just make sure there is no lead in it - and there shouldn't be. I've seen recipes using the terra cotta pots before. Just wash it well.

While it is not the best idea i guess it would be ok, as long as they are new pots or very clean. However you should consider the possibility that some of the pots may contain lead, chemicals, etc.

To be a bit more safe why not line the insides with foil, wax, or parchment paper?

i don't think so considering they are made of clay

I've heard it is, but you have to line them with foil, & only if they are new.
