What is Yogurt known as in India?!

Question: Is yogurt not the same as curd? And what does it mean when a recipe says that "Add 1 tbsp yeast to 1 litre yogurt"? Does milk become yogurt without adding yeast or something like that?

Yogurt & curd are both different.

yogurt is made by adding some starter culture bacteria like lactobacilus to warm milk and allow it to gel. Some flavours, honey, fruits can also be added to it and it is sold commercially. it would be more creamy in texture.

Whereas curd is prepared by adding sour things like tamarind, lemon or vinegar buttermilk to the warm milk .The consistency depends upon the milk.

The term curd is used more commonly in India. But if u see the word yogurt in recipe books...Yes it can be translated as curd. (as they are similar)

Looking at some of the asnwers above me, i would like to clarify that, DAHI (hindi), THEIRE (malayalam), THEI(tamil), PERUGU(telugu) etc.. are all just translation of the word curd into their native languages.

hope this helped!!

'dahii'... ???…
yogurt is rectified curd... ie curd from which water is completely removed...
in Maharashtra, MP and probably Gujarat (India)... 'shrikhand' is prepared out of yogurt...

trust me i know the answer i am an india it is called "thiere" it sounds weird but we make it out of stale milk. welet the milk say in a cold place for like 1 year and it is going to form into yogurt. i really dont like it i think you know the reason. it tastes like garbage. it is that bad! i hate it but every body in my country likes to eat it with there rice and some people even like to put smashed banas in the yogurt and eat it with there rice. sone indians like to put it in there pizzas and sandwiches it is pretty gross

thei

it is known as dahi.

DAHII!

I remember we used to make curd daily from the milk. My grandma used to take some of the cream and put it aside in order to ferment it and yep we had curd.
And I think yougurt is same thing as curd its just that yougurt is the common word used in Western countries where as back in India they say curd.
Also since lots of different languages are spoken in India ofcourse the words used will be different. So well in Hindi, the national language, for curd we say Dahi.

hope that helps. by the way what are you making there? anything with curd tastes delicious, I know that for sure! :D
