What is the purpose of a dough hook?!
Can I use a dough hook as a replacement? And, what is the purpose of a dough hook?
Thanks a lot, I don't really bake often! :)
Answers: I have a recipe indicating that i need to mix some dough using a "dough mixer". I was wondering, what on earth is a dough mixer?

A dough hook is more like the kneading and folding action you would do with your hands.
I think the best part of baking breads and things that need kneading is getting hands on with the dough and feeling the changes it undergoes. A dough mixer should be the same as a dough hook.
I've been baking at least once a week since I was seven, and I'm sixty now.
A dough hook simulates kneading. If your recipe is one that would be kneaded if doing by hand, then yes, you can use the dough hook. Otherwise, they may have just used the wrong term and want you to use a mixer - the kind with the two beaters.
INSTEAD OF JUST A WHISK IT TURNS THE DOUGH AS WELL AS WHISKING IT AND ALSO KNEADS THE DOUGH.
a dough hook is used to fold air into the dough so it rises niceley
It is one of those little used items it it mostly to help make home made bread It helps with blending the ingredients I had one once on an older mixer and really did not like it so just went back to kneading the dough by hand. I guess it will just be used now and then.
