If butternut squash tastes a little sour, does it mean it's bad, or that it's not ripe yet?!

Question: I made butternut squash soup, and it tastes a little sour. I don't think it's anything I added to it. It was just onions, one potato, a carrot, salt, and a pinch of cumin.
It was a really small squash, and a lttle lighter in colour than usual.
