So, can I use the wax paper I have or do I need to buy a box of parchment. I just don't want to buy something I'll never use again...I never even heard of it until this recipe specified it.

Answers: use wax paper instead? I looked and see that wax paper will work on lower temperature recipes and this recipe has the oven at 225 for two hours.

It's iffy, and depends a lot on the specifics of the recipe.
The main problems are temperature and moisture. You have to be careful with wax paper at anythign but very low tempertures, because the wax will melt off and contaminate the food. 225 for two hours is pushing it, but should be okay if you watch it. The other thing is that parchment and wax paper handle water differently, basically parchment sucks it up more than the waterproof wax paper does. This could mean that your cookies will end up waaaay to wet, makign them soggy and/or keepign them from solidifying.

parchment is very expensive and you can substitute waxed paper for low temperature cooking. I do it all of the time and if it is for high temp. cooking, I use the non-shiny side of foil if I don't have any parchment.
Yep you can. Wax paper will do the work. In some recipes even PAM (non-stick spray) will work. No paper to cut to size and afterwards remove.

Wax paper and parchment paper are totally different! Parchment papper is a worthwhile investment if you bake cookies a lot!
Wax paper is covered in WAX! If you use it in the oven it smokes and burns, perhaps light on fire!
Parchment is plain, untreated paper specifically for cooking and baking!

Wax paper & parchment paper are not interchangeable, as previously stated. I keep parchment on hand & use it for baking almost everything - biscuits, cookies, etc. Spend the $2.50. It's worth it.
