Pickled Herring. My mum gave me a jar and I don't know how to cook them. Does anyone have a recipe please?!
Ingredients:
1 lettuce (inner leaves only)
3 apples
3 pickled herring, chopped
3 hard-boiled eggs, chopped
2 boiled beetroots, peeled and cubed in 1/2 inch dice
8 cold boiled potatoes, mashed
3 large sweet pickled gherkins, sliced
1/2 medium onion, peeled and finely chopped (about 1/3 to 1/2 cup)
French dressing
Mayonnaise
Garnish
2 hard-boiled eggs
Sliced pickled gherkins
1 tablespoon chopped parsley
Steps:
1. Decorate an oblong dish with lettuce leaves.
2. Peel, core and dice the apples.
3. Mix immediately with the herring, add all other ingredients except the mayonnaise and garnish, and toss them together in the dressing.
4. Spread the mixture evenly over the lettuce leaves, and cover generously with mayonnaise.
5. Decorate with the garnish.
6. For the garnish, chop the egg whites.
7. Rub the yolks through a sieve.
8. Scatter both on the mayonnaise with the slices of gherkin and parsley.
Good luck & enjoy! =)

You eat them raw, just as they are.
You don't cook them, they are eaten raw.
Eat them on open black rye bread with sliced egg and salad!
Take them out of the jar, serve them with a nice green salad and a chunky piece of crusty buttered bread.
You will then have a meal fit for a King/Queen.
No cooking required.
You don't need to cook them. Just make a salad with apples and chicory with a light dressing with cream.
eat them raw, drain them out and serve with a nice salad or some crusty bread. they may sound/look horrid but are actually really nice!!
Take jar, do not remove lid, go towards the bin in the kitchen, push foot on pedal and drop jar in. Simple!
You don't cook them, the vinegar they are pickled in has "cooked" them, you eat them straight from the jar
They're called roll mops and they are nice with crusty bread and butter and a side salad
Those in jars I believe you don't need to cook.
I remember my grandmother used to (what she called) pickle her own herrings fresh from the sea . I don't have a recipe indeed I didn't really take much notice of what exactly went in there, but I do remember how she would to place herring fillets neatly side by side in a large cast iron pan, cover them over with a concoction of vinegar, peppercorn, onions and whatever else she put in there. She would then heat them up not for very long remove them almost immediately onto the side with a lid on to cool down in the pickle, where they would stand cold for quite some time before they were ready to be served.
wow im gonna try JGG's idea sounds nice!!
just take from the jar and enjoy with a bit of bread .
they are not actually raw as the pickling has cooked the fish chemically but they have the texture of raw fish.
i love them and there all so known as rollmops / Bismark herring soused herrings and many other names depending on the country you are in
Eat them as they are with salad.................ugh!
Eat them as they are with coleslaw.
