This is going to sound silly.... I'm making baked potatoes for the first time and I went to take them out...!

Question: And I just opened the oven and they are making a whistling sound. They are wrapped in aluminum foil and I kid you not, it is making a whistling sound. I'm afraid to take them out or touch them, because that must mean there is built up steam or something... right?

Is that normal? They aren't going to like... pop or something are they? They are still in the oven till someone tells me if they are safe....

Don't be mean... I'm on my own in my own apartment for the first time and this cooking thing looked a lot easier watching my mum do it!

It's totally normal. Just remember next time to poke it with a fork or knife several before wrapping in foil to let the steam escape.

Congrats on your first apartment. Cooking is not so hard. My mom always said "if you can read, you can cook." Well, that's sort of true. However, she should have said "if you can read AND follow directions, you can cook." You might want to buy a good cook book with illustrations to show you how it's done and how the food should look after it's cooked. I found I had better results when I knew what the food should look like after it's cooked. If it doesn't look somewhat like the picture, I knew I did something wrong, even without tasting it. I'm a pretty good cook now.

ya totally normal but if ur still not sure call your mom she will probably know.

You'll be fine... just be SUPER careful, because they are going to be hot. Grab a dishtowel and take them out, and carefully unwrap them.
good for you for cooking at home - keep it up. Usually the worst thing that happens is you mess up :)

Did you poke holes in the potatoes before you wrapped them in the foil? That is an important step, as it lets that built up heat escape. If you did, you may just not have put enough. Go ahead and take em out of your oven and just let them sit for a while before opening them, if you are worried. I think you will be absolutely fine.

its just steam, no problem.

Always pierce the potatoes before baking. If you didn't, they may pop. If you did pierce them, steam should be able to escape through the foil. Open the oven and stick a sharp knife through each (through the foil) to let the steam escape.

use a teatowel around your hands to take them out but dont let them cool down to much cause their skin will go soggy . infact you should bake them for a bit without foil

That is normal. Just steam escaping. Poke some more holes next time and keep up the cooking. Food always tasted better if it was made in your kitchen. well, sometimes...trial and error.
