If you had to kill a chicken and pluck the feathers -could you do it and how do you kill a chicken anyway?!

Question: On principle, I don't think I can do it, unless it is attacking me. And I have been attacked by a flying chicken before. I screamed like a school girl and my dogs took it down.
In theory, you take the head of the chicken, pull it back to expose the side of the neck. Slice through the carotid artery -- the pulsing vein at the side of the neck. You don't have to severe the head off. Expel the blood until the chicken dies. Prepare a pot of boiling water and dip the dead (make sure it is really dead otherwise it'll be failing about in the scalding hot water) chicken in the water until the feathers are soaked. This opens the pores to make plucking easier. Take out the chicken before it gets cooked. Pull out the feathers in bunches.

snap its neck is the most common

For survival only. If it were absolutely necessary that I kill the chicken for my own life, sure I'd do it, and I'd pluck all it's feathers too.

If I could pass the chicken and live another day? No, I'd let him live, unless I was hungry.

It's the way the world works. Kill or be killed. Or dont kill for now but come back later and kill.

cut the head off, then boil it or just pull off the feathers
you weren't raised in the south were you?

no i wouldnt (im veggo) but just watch kid nation to kill or not to kill and then you'll know how to kill and pluck a chicken.

I could do it if I was hungry enough... I would cover the chicken's eyes with one hand and hack off the neck with a sharp machete if I had to kill it myself. It would have to be a survival situation though, for me to be willing to go that route.

you break its neck. My hubby used to raise chickens. he told me stories of picking one up and just with a quick snap of your wrist breaking its neck.

If I had to -Of course!
To dispatch a Chicken, It's a Single Knife draw across the throat(Whilst Holding the bird Firmly under arm).

first to kill a chicken--- what we do is hold the chicken tight and slash its throat with a knife... after a while, the chicken is dead

plucking the feathers - the easiest way for this is to boil the dead chicken in water and after that, its easy to pull its feathers

Snap it's neck....or hold the bird firmly on the chopping block and chop off it's head. Then you blanch the chicken in boiling water to make the feathers easier to remove.

tie its feet together and tether it. then just twist it's neck fast and hard. or you could cut the head off and let it bleed out. but that sucks when it comes time to pluck the feathers. and i grew up on a farm where we raised our own food so yes i could and have.

There are two ways to kill the chicken. You can ring his neck or chop his head off with an axe. Then, you hand pluck the feathers and afterwards you burn the feathers stubs off with fire. Afterwards, you're ready to cook the chicken. But don't forget to remove the guts.

back in the days when my grandma was a young girl in puerto rico she didnt have the luxury of a supermarket and the way to kill a chicken is to stretch the head out and spinning it at the same time.
yes i would do it if didnt have another choice

Slit it's throat. drain the blood then goes into a hair removal machine. worked in a slaughter house for pigs too. nasty work. and they know its going to happen too.

cut the neck off and watch it run around till its dead o.O

People become vegetarians is more healthy.

Been there and have done that. There is actually a manually operated tool that helps with the removal of the feathers.

Of course I love me some fried chicken.

slaughter it with a sharp knife and then put it in hot water to pull of the feathers.

I would ring the neck. Chop off head. Have boiling hot water to dunk the chicken in and pick the feathers. Then over an open fire singe the little feathers off. Done!

I never did kill a chicken but I saw it. You have to put the PLUMES under your leg and take a sharp knife and cut from neck very quickly. If you your knife is not shar it make her pain.

I have . it is a sucky job killing an animal but someone has to do it . We just cut or chop the head off and hang them to blead out , then dip the body in a large pot of boiling water to loosen the feathers for plucking (a very nasty , stinky job) then gut it and remove the lower legs. wash it and freeze it or prep it for cooking.

Well, I've hunted many times. Killing and plucking birds is really gross. This is one of the reasons I don't do it anymore. Yes I could still do it.

How to do it:

1) I don't recommend wringing a chickens neck. There is a technique to do it and if you don't do it right the first time, the chicken will suffer needlessly.

2) Chop its head off with a hatchet.

3) Shotgun. This is probably the most humane and least messiest method.

4) There is a way to put the chicken to sleep so it will not suffer. Turn the chicken over and hold it in your lap (belly side up).

Put one hand over the chickens face and cup your hand so that the chicken can't see anything. With your other hand, gently stroke the chicken's stomach. The chicken will fall asleep.

You can make a small, cloth sack to fit over its head; otherwise, the chicken will wake up if you uncover its eyes.

Place the chicken on the ground and shoot it with a twelve gauge shotgun. Use bird pellet.

I just wouldn't do it. Don't try to raise your own chickens unless you have thousands, if you have only a few...don't eat the meat. There is often very little meat and it's so hard to pluck them.

Yes, I was raised on a farm. We butchered all the animals we ate. We caught fish, gathered snails and oysters, raised vegetables. Many of today's generation has not seen vegetables with roots on them, or soil still clinging to some leaves.

The way to kill and pluck a chicken:

Hold the chicken by the wings and the head, tilt the head backwards and pluck some feathers from the neck. Pat the neck witht he back of a knife, to excite the arteries to be more protruding. Slash the neck, not through and through. Drip the chicken blood into a bowl containing 4 tablespoons of raw rice. When the blood coagulates, you can use the blood in chicken soup, it expands and becomes like blood sausage.

Boil a big pot of water. Dip the dead chicken into the water, holding the bird by the feet. The feathers will be very easy to pluck. Do not dip too much in boiling water or the skin will be "cooked" and tear.

Once you've plucked the chicken, you then have to de-gut it, meaning remove all the intestines and innards, saving only the liver, gizzard and heart.

Now you're ready to cut up the chicken for cooking.

What i know.. people always cut the neck.. then simmer for a while in boilling water so easy to pluck the feathers out off the skin. Sometimes they just pull out the feather including the skin. So the chicken skinless.

Can i do it..??? no i can kill the chicken. If i can .. i wound eat the chicken. Cause .. pity the chicken.... :(

I could if I were hungry enough...like starving. But otherwise, I likely couldn't do it myself....too chicken, and I would have already named that thing, and we would be buddys, so how could you kill your own buddy, unless it was that or starve to death. On the other hand, my Dad helped his farmer friend once kill chickens. I was a kid and came along, and then I had to help pluck them. I thought it was horrible, but I did it. Because that's what farmers do, and that's what the chickens were for. And I only saw them after they already had their heads chopped off. So we weren't buds, yet!! Ha.

I have done it-it's a pain in the butt. I always whacked the head off with a hatchet but my grandma used to put a foot on the head and break the neck with a quick yank. It's less messy but you still have to cut the neck and let the blood drain.

chop off its head. drop it in boiling water for 1 minuite then it pluck and gut it

I did when I was a kid! Actually I help my grandma, I can;t believe I watched it. I could not be able to stand that now!!! It seemed like everytime they snapped the neck it could chase me!!!!!!!! What ever direction I ran away the darn thing went there too! I think it scarred my life in some way!

Sometimes you just have to do messy stuff in life but this could traumatise kids if the family chicken gets centerstage on the dining table and they actually see good ol' Dad become the bad guy who knocks off Mrs Biddy Cluck.

You don't have to chop the head & neck right off. Just slit the neck with a sharp knife quickly and hang the chicken by its feet to drain the blood. Then pour boiling water over it to loosen the feathers to enable easier plucking. You don't want to boil or simmer the chicken otherwise it'll be cooked before you start cooking it.

But if you're inexperienced, best leave this to the pros and just buy your dead chickens from the market. Otherwise you'll just be prolonging the chicken's agony by extending its suffering while you hack away inefficiently.

ugh...ive this before you have to slit the chickens thraot and drain the blood or chop the chickens head off and they chickens body goes into shock and it runs around like crazy. so gross and scary
