What happens when dry roasted peanuts expire?!

Question: I had my first culinary disaster in a while last night when i stir-fried some gorgeous sliced up chicken. At first I thought it was because I had to use a couple of Tblsp of olive oil with the soy sauce (instead of my regular veg oil), but the chicken I cut up for my kids was great...so it happened after I added a handful of frozen peas and about 1/4 cup of peanuts I had in the cupboard, for us. I hadn't noticed they were dated 9/05 (YIKES!) and I know I've used those same ones in the last 6 months.

It tasted like metal, blended with olive oil & soy sauce, but they were in a plastic jar, regular Safeway brand. Absolutely horrid, and my husband and I split a can of Progresso and called it a night.

Do the preservatives in there turn bad, or was it the peanuts themselves? The jar smelled like the taste, if that makes sense, after I went back and checked.

I won't do it again.

The oil in the peanuts had turned rancid, which gives them a sour, slightly metallic taste. You wont' die, but they sure do taste bad.

wOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

yes..the oil in the peanuts went rancid....that has got to be one of the worst taste!!!

Just make sure on your grocery list this week you put down a new jar of peanuts....and ...keeping them in the refrigerator or freezer helps in keeping them a lot fresher! and longer!
