Can you eat squirrels?!

Question: I live in an area of the UK that is still fortunate enough to have the native red squirrels out-number the greys.
They are commonly seen in my back garden. So much so that i have engaged in shooting them for a bit of sport, which is always fun to do after a dinner party, or sexual intercourse.
Now, it seems my conscience has got the better of me. So i was wondering if it's possible to eat them. I normally throw my new found furry friends (normally after they are dead) to my beagles, but this seems such a terrible waste.

Not only have I eaten squirrel, I grew up eating squirrel on a regular basis. My dad was a squirrel hunter, and he brought home bags of fat squirrels throughout the year. Seeing squirrels skinned, cleaned and fried was a weekly event in the Spencer clan, and I ate a lot of squirrel. Spitting out buckshot onto the plate is a memory that I’ll always treasure.
I haven’t eaten squirrel since I was a kid (probably had my last one when I was 12 or 13, 1968 or 69.) If I had to describe it, I’d say it’s almost identical to rabbit. If you haven’t eaten rabbit, you can- at least here in the south- buy it at a lot of stores. “Gamey,” dark meat. Nothing I’d order at a fine restaurant, that’s for sure. But if I had Lino down here, I’d find a way to get a mess of squirrel on the table.

One Hunter’s Favorite Squirrel Recipe

* 3 squirrels, quartered
* Creole seasoning
* 2 strips bacon, cut up
* 1/2 stick butter
* 1 onion, chopped
* 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
* 2 bell peppers, chopped
* 2 stalks celery, chopped
* 3 potatoes, cubed
* 5 cups water
* 1/4 cup burgundy wine

1. Rub the creole seasoning liberally over the squirrels.
2. In a dutch oven, melt the butter. Add the bacon.
3. Add the squirrel to the dutch oven and brown evenly. Remove.
4. To the dutch oven, add the onion, garlic, peppers and celery. Saute until the veggies are soft.
5. Add the meat back to the pot along with the water and potatoes. Stir together.
6. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 1 1/2 hours stirring occasionally.
7. Remove the squirrel pieces. Cool and debone.
8. Return meat to the pot. Stir in the wine. Heat to boiling again then reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes.
9. Serve over biscuits or toast.

You can eat them. There was an episode of River Cottage where Hugh F-Whittington was cooking them. (on a barbeque I seem to remember).

what are you 5? you shoot animals, do you do it with a sling shot.
you could eat the squirrel, skin it, then bone it, then boil it but i wouldn't reconmend eating it.
Let your dogs have it
PS andre sucks

Pervert!

Having been born and raised in Georgia,USA,I can tell you first-hand,YES.
You can prepare them in the way you would a freshly killed chicken,and use your favorite chicken recipe.

You sure can. Skin it, part it, easier to leave the bones in. dredge in some peppered four and fry it. Make up some sawmill gravy and toss it in. eat it over toast. We had squirrel many times growing up.

yes you can, fried and hot salsa

You can only eat greys - reda are protected.

Yep...you can eat any animal!...if you want to?...But,...most people dont want to...they prefer to leave 'some' critters to the mercy of other hungary wild life!...

Yes, my husband always ate what he shot.

Your a turkey I reckon.

Any one here in pink????????????????????????????

well you can eat them but you have to make surer they are properly cooked as when you shoot an animals sometime blood stays in the meat and can be dangerous.
i suggest you only eat them if you really need to satisfy your hunger because killing something just for fun is not good. like you everything in this world have a right to live, and animals help us to keep our Eco to stay stable.

Anyone who believes this question is sincere...needs to review the questions you have given answers to. You poor thing.......find a better hobby.

You can--I can't.
