Regualr wine or cooking wine?!

Question: Does it make a difference if you switch say red wine for red cooking wine? If so, what is the difference?

idk but i've always heard using regular wine is preferrable

it must be a matter of taste, because i couldn't WAIT to try a dish made with this fancy red wine my friend gave me--turns out i didn't like it AT ALL- i didn't like the overtones, and i went back to my $1.99 bottle of Goya red cooking wine-

the brand matters because some brands have made my food taste so salty, while the Goya doesn't seem to have that effect (they've got some sodium based preservative in them)

awesome! i hope they sell it near u! Report It

  • The cooking magazines all agree: Do not waste your money on what is called 'cooking wine.' Use regular wine when cooking. The so called 'cooking wine' is way overpriced and very low in quality.

    .

I Agree with Gerry, just use the wine you have plus cooking wine is salted so you'll need to reduce the salt in your recipe.

You can use either...but don't spend a lot of money on cooking wine for cooking because using a wine for cooking vs drinking is the amount of tolerable oxidation. A wine reacts with oxygen in the air within a few hours, and loses the chemical properties that give it interesting aromas and flavors. So if you have a cheap to semi-cheap drinking wine go ahead and use it. Cooking wines can be more expensive.

Regualr wine is used for drinking
    and...
cooking wine is made for cooking

Use regular wine, flavors and quality are better than the cooking wines.

Cooking wine has salt in it. Just use regular wine.

the cookers on the food network say to never use cooking wine for two reasons it is way to salty and it tastes nasty and they say never to cook with nothing u cant drink, so i use only wine i will drink and that isnt cooking wine for sure... just make sure when buying the wine and cooking with it u cook all the alcohol off and it will leave a wonderful tasting food...

Always use a good tasting wine to cook with. If a wine doesn't taste good in a glass, it's not going to taste good in your food.

never ever buy cooking wine. it actually has salt added to it along with other additives that will make your recipes turn out weird. It is better to cook with real wine, so that you can control the salt level. If you don't drink wine, or don't use it regularly couple suggestions. You can freeze the wine in ice cube traces for later use. It won't be as "fresh" when you defrost it, so it might lose some flavor, but you will get the wine flavor. You can also buy the little single serve style wines that come in a 4-pack at the grocery store. Those are approximately 5ounces per bottle. So you can use as much as you want and not feel bad about throwing out leftovers. Keep the other bottles for later use.
