Scallions a substitue for green onions?!

Question: I am going to make a sauce that calls for "1 small green onion". I went to several markets; no green onions. However, in two of the markets, someone working in the produce section pointed me towards the scallions. Are scallions an equivalent to green onions?

Thanks.

Scallions = Green onions.. This is her second name.

Scallions are smaller and lighter flavor of regular green onions.
You can certainly make this swap; just buy enough to add more if you feel necessary - taste it first.

yes pretty much the same thing

I thought they where praticaly the same thing

i don't know why you could...do taste test to make sure you have the right flavor...may have to ad more of less..

Sometimes the difference is local. Here in the midwest United States, a scallion is a green onion and a green onion is a scallion. Elsewhere there may be some sort of difference like in Pennsylvania, a green bell pepper is often referred to as a mango (which everywhere else is a tropical fruit)

They are the same thing.

yes

Yes you can use the scallions.....in place of green onions....Also, many people cut off and toss out the green tops of the green onions.....they are so flavorful in almost everything...it is such a waste to toss them out....
