I'm makin shortbread cookies and the instruction says use all purpose flour. what does it mean?!


Question: i had this problem when i moved to canada all purpose flour is plain and it will be great for you shortbread its just the terms we use over here is different from uk , infact everywhere will have a different name for the same stuff ,,its confusing but thats the way it is ,good luck with them and hope they turn out tasty.

Plain flour. Not self raising.

It means use all purpose flour.

Just plain flour

All purpose flour will be printed on the front of the bag.

All-purpose flour is the flour made from wheat.
It is fine and refined after all the milling process.
It is usually whitish in colour.

It's primarily an American/Canadian term, and those who live outside have their own name for it...

Plain flour that doesn't have salt and baking powder added to it, like self-rising flour does.

Self rising flour has the leavening agents(baking Powder)already added
All purpose flour is just flour

It is the regular white flour...and All-purpose would be on the front of the bag. Some recipes will say:
ap flour
Ap flour....
flour
All of these are referred to All Purpose......or plain gravy makin flour.
And there is lots of flours, Whole Wheat, Self Rising, Cake Flour, Pastry Flour.
Then there is speciality flours like:
Rice, Potatoe, Rye.........and more I can't think of right now....
