When you cook for company do you make enough for seconds, thirds and take - home plates?!

Question: That is part of the fun of sharing a meal. I always make extra, never know when someone is going to drop in or if someone is sick I enjoy taking a meal to the house so that they can relax and enjoy.

Think I learned a lot from my mother in law who was Sicilian and a tremendous cook who had at least a dozen people at Sunday dinner, and plenty of extra food for any extra people that showed up. Those were the good old days, she is deceased now and I'm sure she is cooking with the Angels in Heaven.

no never i always make sure there is enough for everyone to have a decent meal but if you are doing a buffet type setting then there is always seconds but never 3rds and take home plates

I try to make enough for seconds, but never thirds or take home plates. In erring, I'd rather make too much and have leftovers, than to not have enough.

Only during the holidays...They have to bring their own doggie bag............LOL

I try to make enough times 50 percent. this way if some want seconds they can and there may be enough for some to take home. know your guests as well, if they are hearty eaters then definately bulk up on food. If some are lighter eaters then make less. thirds and take home plates remind me of my grandma. she used to stock a big brown grocery bag full of stuff for the car ride home lol. thirds and take home not always necessary.

For me, there should always be enough food for people to eat more than one helping if they want it, but the idea that you have to supply your guests with another plate of food to take home for themselves or someone else is ridiculous. You are feeding the people who make the effort to come to your home for a meal. It is up to you if you want to provide extra, but it certainly shoudn't be expected. If you wish, you can let people know they are welcome to take left overs, first come first serve, but I think it's wrong to expect that you will make enough for that. Hope this helps. Rob R

You should make enough for seconds but not take home plates. Now if your guests are too full for desert and you have made some, I would offer them the option of taking home a sample if you choose but that is not nessessary either. You are feeding them for 1 meal not cooking so that they have left overs to eat on for the week at your expense. The only time this is appropriate as far as i am concerned is when a big holiday dinner has been cooked where everyone brings a dish. Then if a family member could not attend for what ever reason, it would be fine to fix A plate to take back for them. The rest of the food would be taken home by who ever brought it.

i always make sure there is enough for second helpings, anything other than that is greedy. if second helpings are not used then we eat it the next day.

It depends on the menu.

If I make a pot of stew or chili, I make a big enough batch for everyone to eat their fill and to have left-overs.

If I'm making more elegant main courses, no, I don't make a lavish amount. If I roast a leg of lamb, or a turkey, or cook a beef roast, there might be enough for seconds, but there might not be. My goal is to prepare enough food to give all my dinner guests a generous portion, not to feed them for a week.

Doc

I try to make enough for everyone to have a decent plate and perhaps seconds, that's the limit, except for the holidays. Then I go over board because family has a way of stopping and bringing friends.

LOL !
if I cook
and that indeed is a rarity
I make sure all the tummys are full !

I make sure there is plenty to eat and take home. The fun part is to see your guests enjoy themselves and take some home so they don't have to cook and enjoy the rest of there day.
We love sharing.....that is what it's all about!!!
