Shelf-Life of Leftovers?!
How do I tell my boss the food is too old to sell. Without sounding like I don't trust her judgement on what food is good and whats not.
Answers: I work part-time at my local IGA aside from my full-time job. All prepared food that we make usually has a shelf life of 5 days. We started making lasagna and sausage & peppers and are selling it out of our salad case and when the 5 days is up repacking it and putting it out in our cheese case for sale. This is disgusting selling food that is up to 10 days old, just because it looks and smells good doesn't mean bacteria isn't growing. I don't understand why she's keeping it for so long because everything else we make is thrown out after 5 days.

that previous advice is just ridiculous! call the health dept before you even say anything to your boss about your concerns?! that's the type of litigious person that we need more of (sarcasm). If the company is putting shelf-life claims on the package as if it is fresh then that is wrong. However, many groceries put out "manager's specials" that are discounted and meant to be consumed immediately because it is clearly marked that the food item is about to expire. So I would need more info to really tell you what is the proper course of action and whether the food is truly violating health codes. Regardless of how it is being sold, you should be able to discuss this with the deli manager. If she can't prove the safety and be able to look up the code concerning storage/sale of fresh deli products then she is at fault. It is her job to know the regulations. You should not be intimidated, just approach the subject cautiously and ask simple questions. it could just be a matter of ignorance-the deli manager doesn't know any better and since you have concerns you should raise them with her.
That is so gross!
I wouldn't say a word... just make a well-placed phone call to the local Health Dept. that does inspections of restaurant and commercial kitchens. Tell them after 5 days in the case, it is repackaged and goes on sale elsewhere in the store. If they press you for a name, give them a fake one. Then just stand back and let the chips fall where they may.
I agree with 'Sugar Pie' on this. Making a comment towards your boss will only rock the boat for you; nothing good will come of it. Taking matters to a higher authority seems like a safe career move.
ask your supervisor , you may get a good explanation . but i do agree 10 days is way excessive
