Nothing!!! If you recipe calls for cloves, that is what you should use otherwise the dish is not going to taste as it was intended. As a trained culinary professional I can state this as fact. Sure, you could use allspice as some have suggested, but I cannot emphasize enough how this will not give you the dish as it was intended to be.

use half and try nutmeg
All spice could work as well.

Pam

allspice or nutmeg and cinnamon

Allspice has the most similar flavor. It tastes like a blend of cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg. If you have allspice already try that. Other spices will give you less similar flavors. What do you want to flavor?

Lately it seems like all spices are expensive. In the main spice section of the supermarket I thought I was going to need a loan to get ground cinnamon over the holidays!
In my area (Southern California) you can save some money by buying your spices in an ethnic market. Asian markets and Indian markets have really good prices but you may need to ask for help if the labels don't have pictures or are not translated into English. Spanish or Mexican markets carry a brand of spices that comes in smaller bags and are very reasonable, in fact my local supermarket has an area with these "Mexican" brands. So much less than McCormick's or Spice Hunter.
