Can I substitute real vanilla for a vanilla bean in a angel food cake recipe?!

Question: I have some real vanilla I bought in Mexico about 4 yrs ago, so I think I would rather use it then spend the $8 on a jar of real vanilla bean which I dont have in my pantry.
Whats the difference and will real vanilla work instead of the bean?

Split the bean down the middle then scrape out the grains and use them. Don't throw the pod away, stick it in your sugar jar or use it for sauce anglaise.

The vanilla bean will leave the tell tale "brown specs" but other than that there is no reason to not use the "real Vanilla". Good Luck!
