Cover and store in the fridge, but take it out in advance to give it time to warm to room temp before using.

After frosting the cake can be left at room temp for a couple of days, covered, without any ill effects. It should be fine to leave out for that same day.

Icing in the fridge, cake can be left on the counter, covered.

Well, the icing has butter in it, and butter requires refrigeration. As for the cake, I'd wrap that in aluminum foil and leave it at room temperature. generally, after you frost a cake, you'd want to serve it soon after, and let it come to room temperature for optimal flavor. If you must ice it the day before, it will require refrigeration, and it will make the actual cake part harder and drier.

the best trick to icing a cake is to frost it frozen, put the cake in the freezer and the icing in the fridge. when you are ready to frost take out both and do so, then, put the cake(frosted) back in the freezer until 2 to 3 hours before eating. my mom made cakes professionally and did this . her cakes were always amazing, now i do it and they are just as good! good luck!! :)
