msmonroe...good for you for asking...there are no stupid questions when it comes to cooking...only ruined food for not asking...everyone here had some good ideas for making great garlic bread. Here are a few of my ideas/tips...
Version 1: Let your butter soften at room temp., place it in a bowl and add in fresh minced garlic & 1 tsp. of chopped fresh parsley. Mix it thoroughly. Slice your loaf of French Bread either horizontally (lengthwise) or into slices. Spread the butter mixture on the bread. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. Place the bread on a baking sheet and bake at 350 for about 15 minutes.
Version 2: This version adds garlic flavor but has ALOT fewer calories. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees, place your slices of bread on a baking sheet & crisp up as desired. When they are done, take peeled cloves of garlic (cut in half) and start to rub it on the bread while it's hot. My Italian friends from Italy are more prone to use this method.
Garlic bread rules!!!

1 16-ounce loaf of Italian bread or French bread
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
2 large cloves of garlic, smashed and minced
1 heaping tablespoon of freshly chopped parsley
1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

1 Preheat oven to 350°F.

2 Cut the bread in half, horizontally. Mix the butter, garlic, and parsley together in a small bowl. Spread butter mixture over the the two bread halves. Place on a sturdy baking pan (one that can handle high temperatures, not a cookie sheet) and heat in the oven for 10 minutes.

3 Remove pan from oven. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese over bread if you want. Return to oven on the highest rack. Broil on high heat for 2-3 minutes until the edges of the bread begin to toast and the cheese (if you are using cheese) bubbles. Watch very carefully while broiling. The bread can easily go from un-toasted to burnt.

4 Remove from oven, let cool a minute. Remove from pan and make 1-inch thick slices. Serve immediately.

before. about 3 to 4 mins.

Put it on before you bake it and I would say bake it at about 400 degrees for anywhere between 6 and 8 minutes. Keep an eye on it and when the edges are starting to get golden and cheese is melted and bubbly it's done. YUM.

before, 350 degrees for about 6-7 min

u put it on before n u bake till its golden brown

GOURMET GARLIC BREAD

1 loaf French bread
1/4 lb. butter
4 cloves garlic, minced
Progresso Italian style bread crumbs

In small saucepan, melt butter. Add minced garlic and boil for 30 seconds; do not let butter burn! Slice bread lengthwise making sure not to slice it all the way through. Slice again across width down length of bread, not through! Put bread in foil and pour butter over, getting it inside slices. Wrap and heat in oven 5 or 10 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle bread crumbs over top. Serve immediately.

when I make garlic toast, I butter thee bread, then put garlic powder on them, and sometimes cheese too. Then put them under the broiler of the oven for about 4-5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.

the oven temperature know should have a spot on it that says "broiler". and you really shouldn't have to preheat it for more than a few minutes.
depending on if the oven is electric or gas the broiler will be in a different location. for most electric oven the broiler is inside of the main oven and at th very top, you'll want to move the oven rack as close to it, without touching, as possible; for gas ovens they are usually in the bottom drawer part of the oven. Always leave the door open a slight bit when using the broiler
