Condensed milk and evaporated milk...are they the same thing??!

Question: are these the same thing, or different?

Answers: are these the same thing, or different?

No. Condensed milk is sweetened and evaporated milk is not.

Condensed milk and evaporated milk are often confused because their names sound so similar. After all, doesn't evaporation condense/concentrate what it leaves behind? Actually, yes. Unsweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk are the same thing. To make it, 60% of the water in the milk is removed by evaporation in a high-heat environment. The heat causes some of the natural sugars in the milk to caramelize, so it is often slightly darker in color than plain milk. While the original evaporated milk was made from whole milk, it also comes in nonfat and low fat varieties. It is sometimes used in baking, but is most often suggested as a lighter version of cream for soups and coffee drinks. It is shelf-stable, so it's a great thing to keep around the house in case a recipe calls for it.

no

no ...condensed milk is thick...evaporated is not

No, they are different. But I dont really know how or why.

no.definitely not. evaporated milk is a milk product with no additions. condensed milk is very thick and VERY sweet. Remember those things called "magic bars". they were made with graham cracker crust, chocolate chips, nuts, and coconut. Then you just poured the CONDENSED milk over all of this and through the pan in the oven. Gooood Eating (if you're not dieting!!)

no way! totally difference

Yes...the milk is condensed by evaporation. But watch out for recipes that call for "sweetened condensed milk" which has (a lot) of added sugar.

Condensed Milk is milk with 60% of its water removed thru evaporation. If it remains unsweetened, it's Evaporated Milk. If sugar is added to sweeten it, it becomes Sweetened Condensed milk and it thicker than Evaporated Milk.

no condensed milk is sweetened, evaporated is not. they are about as thick, so if you are making something that calls for one or the other, make sure to adjust and sweetening that is in the recipe
