Seasoning a wok - did I do it right?!

Question: I just attempted to season my wok, i used instructions from various sites. I used tongs to dip a kitchen rag in olive oil and i rubbed it through the wok after heating it up really high. The oil dried up fast, and each time i put in more oil on it it would burn the oil and the rag, and now my rag is burned and has some holes in it.

There is a black ring that covers the base of the wok, and the rest of the wok is mostly brown. Did I do it right? Is the rag supposed to remain intact? If so was I supposed to wet the rag first, because that rag was delicately drenched with olive oil? And is the entire wok supposed to be black, because only the ring is black, the middle is brown, and the walls of the wok go from brown to the original metallic color? Thanks,

Medium high heat works beter than really high heat, for all the reasons you detail. But take heart, this is a good start. Just use the wok and treat the surface with some respect - i.e. no scrubbing, dry completely after use - and all will be seasoned soon.

I've never heard of using a kitchen rag to season it and i can't really say that you did it wrong but i've only ever heated it up then used the spray oil and sprayed it all around lightly the cooled and put it away how many times did you put oil in it it probably burned the oil cause the wok was too hot

Wok is meant to be browned, you can't keep it shiny no matter what. You don't have to do it too often, and yes, you did it right.

wok will lose its coloring and will color to brown. try just heating it to medium high next time. when the towel starts to burn its to high.
