Lentils and brown rice are cheap, Delicious and good for you. Here is a good recipe: Brown Rice and Lentil Casserole http://www.recipezaar.com/74629
Oatmeal is inexpensive, filling and good for you also. Cook according to directions- then add a dash of salt and cinnamon to taste. If you already have syrup in the house, add that as well.
Here is a website you might find helpful: http://recipefinder.nal.usda.gov/ Scroll to the bottom of the page and you can type in how much money you can spend per recipe or serving. Here is a good thread that people put inexpensive meal ideas on: http://www.recipezaar.com/bb/viewtopic.z...
Inexpensive food items are lentils, beans (dried are cheaper than canned), rice, pasta, eggs.........
I hope your situation improves quickly. Best of luck.
Beans, rice, and bread things that will fill the belly well. Also see if you can find some coupons to help that cash go a little farther.
Get the cheapest food with the highest nutritional value- not that crappy instant noodle stuff. Beans and rice, peanut butter and whole grain bread, pasta and frozen veggies, eggs, etc. Save even more money and buy dried beans and cook the from scratch:

I don't know where you live, but don't they have places with foodboxes? Check your local churches, and missions. Often you can get a foodbox with $45.00 in food for around $15.00, and you don't have to meet any income reqirements.
Also, try to cook with what you have on hand, if anything, create a menu that uses what you have first, so you only need to buy a few items to stretch what you have out.
A pound of dried beans, a pound of rice , 1 fresh green pepper. 2 large onions,, one carrot, two larger tins of tomatoes, just diced is fine. 1 pound of spahetti or cheapest noodles. You can make a spaghetti sauce and spahetti. Don't use it all, you'll use some to flavor your beans and rice . Also to make a minestrone type soup with the tomatoe sauce with veggies, some cooked pasta and beans and your carrot. Oatmeal with an apple or banana to add a little interest. A dozen eggs will give you six breakfasts of eggs and cheap or day old bread can be made into French toast too.
I agree that dried beans and dried pasta plus some sauces can help you stretch your money... I would add eggs so you can have some omelets, scrambled eggs with beans... you can make inexpensive egg dishes and enjoy a great source of protein.
Hope you both find employment soon!
